Overview

Nursing for Wellness in Older Adults emphasizes health promotion in relation to the physiological and psychosocial aspects of aging. The functional consequences theory, which looks at how normal age-related changes and risk factors intersect to impact functioning in older adults, forms the framework for the book. Assessment boxes summarize questions and techniques used to assess various aspects of the older adult's functioning. Intervention boxes contain practical suggestions for maximizing function and promoting health. Other features include progressive case studies; lists of organizations to contact for additional information and for patient/client teaching tools; culture boxes and diversity notes, which highlight culture, race, and gender differences; and critical thinking exercises. Additional resources are available at the Connection Website, connection.LWW.com/go/miller.

The book contains both black-and-white and two-color illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Marquis D. Foreman
This is a third edition text on nursing care of older adults. According to the author, the purpose is to ""provide nurses with the knowledge base needed to help older adults function at their highest level, despite the presence of age-related changes and risk factors. Using this test, nurses and nursing students can assist older adults in meeting the many challenges of older adulthood in a positive and creative way."" The targeted audience is students and nurses ""who desire to enhance their knowledge about the unique responses of older adults to actual or potential health problems."" Each of the 22 chapters, organized into five sections, is structured similarly: learning objectives, chapter summary, critical thinking exercises, case examples, nursing care plan, references, and resources for educational materials (Internet locations when available). New to this edition is attention to ""cultural considerations of aging and older adults."" Although written at an appropriate level for the target audience, the information presented in this text is inadequately detailed to enable such nurses to change their practice to better meet the health needs of the elderly. One example: ""Simon and colleagues have presented a model used effectively to detect, assess, and treat patients with delirium."" No other information about that model is provided. Delirium also serves as an example for another problem, making this book a major disappointment that includes outdated information. The author refers to delirium as ""an alteration in sleep-wake cycle,"" a notion that disappeared from the literature at least by 1994. More importantly, a rather substantial body of nursing research about acuteconfusion/delirium is absent. Important nursing literature on other healthcare problems for the elderly is also missing. As a result of these flaws, this book fails to meet its objective.

Booknews
Covers all aspects of physical and psychosocial function that distinguish gerontological nursing from other types of nursing, with sections on the phenomenon of aging, changes and consequences related to psychosocial and physiologic function and comfort, and multidimensional aspects of care. Learning aids include outlines, objectives, summary tables, and guidelines for assessment and various procedures, plus case examples and sample nursing care plans. This third edition offers boxes on cultural factors and alternative health care practices, a two-color design, critical thinking exercises, and a revised focus emphasizing the primary care provider.
