Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Vicki Ann Moss, DNSc, MS, BSN, RN (University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh)
Description: This book focuses on the nonclinical aspects of professional nursing, tracing the historical development of nursing, identifying the changes and challenges facing nursing and healthcare in the 21st century.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an overview of the professional nursing role and thus help students transition to the professional role and become contributing members of the healthcare team.
Audience: The audience is undergraduate nursing students.
Features: The 16 chapters are divided into three units — Moving Into the Profession of Nursing, Understanding Healthcare in Today's Society, and Approaching Greater Responsibility for Nursing Practice. Each chapter begins with learning outcomes and key terms and ends with a summary of the chapter's key concepts. Critical thinking activities and vignettes of real-life experiences are included in each chapter. Student and instructor resources are also available. A charming aspect of this book is the healthcare cartoons interspersed throughout.
Assessment: As with their earlier editions, the authors present the material in a logical, easy to read and understand format filled with a plethora of activities to help students translate the information into practice. They have updated the book with the nursing issues of today such as safety, evidence-based practice, and healthcare reform. The chapters do not have to be read in order, which gives the instructor flexibility in designing courses around this book.
