Description: This book is for beginning and advanced students who are applying the nursing process and learning clinical skills. It builds from simple to complex so the students may integrate their acquired knowledge along the way. The previous edition of this book was published in 2000.
Purpose: The purpose is to promote student learning of clinical interventions and skills necessary to provide sound nursing care. These objectives are good ones and met by the authors.
Audience: The audience is beginning and advanced nursing students. The authors are well known in the area of nursing process and foundational nursing care.
Features: The book presents material from simple to complex in an easy to use format. The first part of the book includes basic material on infection control, patient safety, hygiene, and vital signs. The latter portion addresses complex skills such as gastric intubation and enteral nutrition. The student's learning is reinforced by the presentation of the material. It follows the nursing process and includes icons to direct the reader to apply principles of infection control, delegation, age/developmental considerations, and long-term aspects of care. Two of the new features of this edition are a unit on wound care and one on end of life care. In the palliative care section material should be included to address cultural consideration as well as the neonatal/perinatal patient.
Assessment: There are many books available on application of the nursing process but this one's unique features such as use of icons to guide the learner as well as very colorful, accurate photos of skills or aspects of assessment are an excellent teaching/learning enhancement. This book details more of the special considerations than can be found in competing text such as Kozier, et al., Fundamentals of Nursing: Concepts, Process, and Practice, 6th edition (Prentice Hall Health, 2000) or Doenges, et al., Nurse's Pocket Guide: Diagnoses, Interventions, and Rationales, 8th edition (F.A. Davis, 2002).

    It was worth it!

    As a nursing student I found this book very helpful when it comes to Clinical skills. I bring this book w/ me during clinicals and it helps me a lot. I like the fact that it has sample documentations. it makes charting a lot easier/faster and accurate. Also a good review for NCLEX!

    A Must Have For Mastering Clinical Skills

    If you're in the your first year of nursing school, you need this book! If you are a nursing lab instructor you will find this book extremely helpful in promoting/teaching good clinical skills. Detailed procedures are organized in specific skills categories. Each skill is clearly listed, in step-by-step format, complete with rationals. Pictures / diagrams are clear and concise, and serve to enhance understanding. The online support beautifully backs up what the book portrays, with specific readings for each skill, organized systematic skills lists, which are modifiable to suit different curriculum needs, NCLEX style questions, and video clips. A perfect reference tool, which also doubles as a study guide for those test questions which ask 'What would the Nurse assess first?' or, 'What is the primary nursing intervention?'.
