Description: Chapters in this overview of commonly ordered laboratory, radiological, and diagnostic tests follow a consistent pattern, beginning with learning objectives and keywords before discussing the broader topic and, finally, the tests. The first edition of this book was published in 2009.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide nurses with a straightforward reference that deals specifically with commonly encountered medical tests, with the goal of preparing nurses to educate their patients about medical tests. In fact, the book delineates specific goals for nurses regarding tests: 1) what they are; 2) why they are ordered; 3) how they are performed; 4) how the patient should prepare for them; 5) how long it takes to receive the results; and 6) how to understand those results. The objectives are worthy, as many nurses, especially novice nurses, are unfamiliar with the ins and outs of diagnostic testing. Largely due to the sheer number of available diagnostic tests, nurses are sometimes unable to provide patients with concise, accurate information. The book meet its objectives, providing a concise overview of commonly ordered tests in a format that is easy to follow, easy to retain, and easy to implement.
Audience: The intended audience is practicing nurses, but the book is most appropriate for nursing students and novice nurses. Nurses who work in critical care units and more experienced nurses may find this book lacking in detail and depth.
Features: The best feature of this book is its adherence to an orderly structure, which may help with understanding and retention. A consistent outline of every test includes: 1) what is being measured; 2) how the test is performed; 3) rationale(s) for the test; 4) nursing alerts (practice pearls); 5) nursing implications; 6) understanding the result; and 7) patient education. Each chapter concludes with a quiz, and there is a cumulative final examination at the end of the book. The book is clearly written and keywords are well defined throughout. The cover's explicit statement, "hard stuff made easy," accurately describes the book.
Assessment: The quality of the book can be best judged by its utility for specific types of nurses. This book will be useful to nursing students and novice nurses, as it provides an adequate overview of the subject, but it is by no means an exhaustive source of information. When compared to Laboratory Tests and Diagnostic Procedures, 6th edition, Chernecky and Berger (Elsevier, 2013), this book lacks breadth and detail, and more experienced nurses may find it to be overly simplistic. As books should be revised as the body of knowledge grows, there is always room for an update, but this edition is not demonstrably different from the first edition in terms of usefulness or structure.
