From The Critics
Reviewer: Mary Dee McEvoy, PhD, RN(Mount Sinai Hospital and Medical Center)Description: This softcover book is a compendium of frequently asked questions by oncology nurses accompanied by the answers. There are 71 chapters arranged in 7 sections.
Purpose: The purpose is to answer in a quick, easy to use format, the most frequently asked questions of oncology nurses. This is accomplished by short chapters on a wide variety of topics. The authors view this text as an adjunct to the several comprehensive oncology nursing texts available.
Audience: Primarily written for the beginning oncology nurse, more advanced nurses will also find it helpful. The authors have included an impressive array of 85 contributors. Although the majority are nurses, there are also physicians, social workers, and pharmacists.
Features: Readers will find the unique question and answer format interesting. There are pertinent illustrations, although limited in number. Tables are embedded within the answers to the questions, merging them with the text. The index is essential to locating the topic of interest. The references are current. The print is somewhat small.
Assessment: The format of question and answers is a unique method for the presentation of knowledge. Consistent with the authors' recommendation, I urge using it in conjunction with one of the major oncology textbooks. The textbooks provide information in a thorough and logical manner. Readers can then go to this "secrets" book to reinforce the answers to their questions.
