Description: This book describes the essence of using research to guide nursing practice and presents "Voices from the Field," which illustrate stories from practicing nurses and their experiences with the research process.
Purpose: The purpose is to demonstrate how to use research for successful nursing practice, and it provides a fundamental understanding of all types of research. This is a worthwhile purpose, especially with the focus on evidence-based practice.
Audience: The audience includes undergraduate nursing students, RNs returning to school, and practicing nurses applying evidence-based practice. The author is an academic dean at a major university.
Features: The book covers the material found in an essentials-type research book in a very straightforward manner, integrating quantitative and qualitative research. The "Voices from the Field" are excellent for demonstrating the actual research process as carried out by practicing nurses. Critical appraisal exercises allow readers to apply the chapter content. Selected chapters have a skill builder which provides advice for finding research, critically reading research, and strengthening research skills. This edition contains both student and instructor ancillaries to aid teaching and learning. Instructors have the usual PowerPoint slides, test bank, class discussion questions, and class exercises that they can access upon adoption. Using the code available in each book, students have access to the companion website with an interactive glossary, flashcards, crossword puzzles, chapter objectives, student quiz, student workbook, documenting evidence-based practice activities, appraisal exercises, and podcasts.
Assessment: This will be very useful to the target audience. The chapters are easy to read, and the online resources will be very helpful to students. The author notes that this edition is fully updated and revised from the 2008 edition, but it is unclear just what the changes are.
