Description: This book provides the reader with the basics of qualitative research. The philosophical basis of qualitative research is discussed and major qualitative methods with exemplars are presented.
Purpose: The purpose is to describe the essence of qualitative research and its relevance to nursing. The philosophical underpinnings and methodology are presented. The author stresses that more in-depth information can be found in the references. The purpose is worthwhile and is met by the author.
Audience: The target audience for this book is the nurse conducting qualitative research and for the nursing research student. The author and contributing authors are qualitative nurse researchers.
Features: This book consists of three sections. The first section lays the philosophical foundation for qualitative research. The language, epistemology, and philosophy are discussed. Section 2 is the "how-to" portion of the book. Seven qualitative methods are discussed followed by exemplar chapters for each method: phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, case study, historical, interpretive analysis, and action research. Section 3 discusses the issues and considerations that affect qualitative methods including ethical consideration, institutional review, data analysis strategies, triangulation, evaluation of qualitative research, development of proposals, and getting ideas and online help.
Assessment: This book will be a valuable reference for a qualitative nurse researcher. It provides the researcher with the basic information to prepare a qualitative research proposal. In this edition, two new qualitative methods are added: interpretive analysis (hermeneutics), and action research. This book has been updated with current and new studies.
