Noted theorists and scholars explore the historical and contemporary theories that are the foundation of nursing today. The 3rd Edition of this highly praised book meets the needs of today’s students with a new focus on the models that define the best outcomes and provide the evidence that supports nursing practice.

For each theory, you’ll find an introduction to the theorist, a description of the theory’s role as a model for nursing practice, and an examination of its application in clinical practice. Readers will understand how the theory has been used in the past and evaluate it as a model for clinical practice.

Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer:Vicki Ann Moss, DNSc, MS, BSN, RN(University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh)
Description:The authors discuss nursing theory and its relationship to practice, research, administration, and education. They demonstrate how theory guides all nursing endeavors including communication between patients, colleagues, students, and other health professionals.
Purpose:The purpose of this book is to honor nurse theorists and those nurses who use theory in their day-to-day practice by reflecting on the contributions of the great nurse thinkers and doers throughout history.
Audience:This book is written for baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral students to assist them in understanding the various nursing theories and ways they can be used in practice and scholarship. It is also written for nurses who want to enhance their knowledge of theory.
Features:The book is divided into four sections: 1) Perspectives on Nursing Theory; 2) Evolution of Nursing Theory: Essential Influences; 3) Nursing Theory in Nursing Practice; Education, Research, and Administration; and 4) Nursing Theory: Illustrating Processes of Development. Many theorists wrote their own chapters or chose persons to write that are experts in their particular theory. Each chapter begins with an outline and ends with a summary. The pattern for each chapter was selected by individual authors to provide freedom for their particular writing style. In general, however, each author introduces the theorist, the theory and then discusses its use in practice, research, education and/or administration. An instructor's manual is also available.
Assessment:Thisis an excellent reference for any nurse who wants to explore more about a certain theorist or theory. Each chapter could stand alone which makes it an interesting and easy read. An especially worthwhile portion is the discussion of the application of each theory to research, practice, education and/or administration. New chapters include "Technological Competency as Caring and the Practice of Knowing Persons as Whole" and "Developing a Model for Community Nursing Practice." It has something for everyone.
