Martha Raile Alligood is professor emeritus at East Carolina University College of Nursing in Greenville, NC, where she was the Director of the Nursing PhD program. She is known nationally and internationally for her expertise in nursing theory and she is also the author of another Elsevier title, Nursing Theory: Utilization and Application, 5th edition which is a companion to this title. This title will not be revised due to low sales.

Description: This book demonstrates the use of theory for patient-focused nursing and serves as a companion to Nursing Theorists and Their Work, 7th edition, Alligood and Tomey (Elsevier, 2010). Through case applications from actual nursing practice, it illustrates ways that nursing students and practicing nurses can apply theory and critical thinking.
Purpose: The purpose is to demonstrate how nursing philosophies, theories, and models guide nursing's critical thinking and decision-making.
Audience: The audience includes nursing faculty and students at all levels of education from undergraduate to masters to doctor of nursing practice (DNP). It also could be used for in-service education for nursing staff development.
Features: The book is divided into three parts, Conceptualization, Application, and Expansion. Part 1 is the history and background of theory and professional nursing practice. An extensive bibliography of research literature of theory-based nursing practice applications is included. The 16 chapters in part 2 identify the major nursing theories and models, showing how each guides nursing thought and action. Case examples and critical thinking exercises demonstrate application. Part 3 presents areas for more theory-based research with tables that show gaps in theoretical application.
Assessment: This is a very comprehensive book on theory and application. The various patient scenarios help guide readers in ways they can use nursing philosophies, nursing theories, and nursing models in everyday practice. It is, as the editor states, useful for nurses and students at every educational level.
