VOYAPart of the Teens Parenting series, this revised edition (original Morning Glory, 1999/VOYA February 2000)offers teens practical information needed for baby's first few weeks of life. Each of the eight chapters opens with excerpts from interviews with teenage parents and marginal notes indicating the chapter's contents. The earlier chapters focus on bonding with baby, breastfeeding, recognizing post-partum depression, and making baby comfortable. Several chapters teach teen parents how to talk to healthcare providers and how to recognize diaper rash, thrush, jaundice, and colic. Fathers are not ignored although information is also provided for teen mothers without partners. The authors encourage including teen fathers, regardless of marital status, in the baby's life as early as possible. In a separate chapter, dad's rights and shared parenting are discussed. Fathers are urged to provide financial support, health insurance, and love for their children. Other issues such as filing for child support, accepting help from grandparents, and staying with extended family are covered in clear and concise language. Terms that may be unfamiliar are typed in bold or italics and defined immediately. The authors, a teacher and a nurse, have years of experience working with pregnant and parenting teens. Lindsay has written more than fifteen books on the subject. Teen parents are challenged to further their education while simultaneously taking care of a little one. Information about planned parenthood is frank and honest. The black-and-white photos of beautiful babies, alone and with a parent, add to the book's attractiveness. This book would be a great addition to public and school libraries as wellas medical facilities such as clinics.
