Description: This book can be used by college professors and students in introductory courses in areas related to nutrition, activity, and sport, as well as by individuals looking to improve athletic performance through nutritional aspects as it covers fundamental concepts in an easy to follow format.
Purpose: The purpose is to serve as a textbook in preparatory college classes related to health, fitness, sport, and nutrition. This book relays the information in an interesting question/answer format and meets the author's objectives for an introductory level of knowledge.
Audience: The book is written to be used by students in areas related to health, fitness, and sport as they relate to nutrition. This author has many publications and has done much research in this area.
Features: Clearly outlined topics and questions make the table of contents extensive, but relatively easy to use as a search tool. The figures and tables are presented in a clean, understandable, and easy to follow format, and the extensive use of color throughout the book adds to the appeal for the reader. Features such as the key concept recap, check yourself, application questions, and review questions provide a good focus for readers and a way for professors to ensure key information was understood. Completing all of the application exercises would take extensive time, but the opportunity is there for teachers to select some for possible review or potential assignments. It should be noted that there is a new version of the food guide pyramid, MyPyramid, which needs to be updated in a future edition of this book.
Assessment: The large number of references at the end of each chapter that can serve as resources for further information is a highlight of this book. This newest edition includes numerous additional references. Overall, this book is easy to follow, visually appealing, and at a concept level good for introductory college courses relating to nutrition, activity, and sport.

Meet the Author

Melvin Williams is the Director of Human Performance Laboratory at Old Dominion University, and has more than 30 years of lab research with a focus on the role of nutrition in sports. He has written and edited five books on ergogenic aids and the role of nutrition in sports — his two latest books are The Ergogenics Edge: Pushing the Limits of Sports Performance (Human Kinetics) and Nutrition for Health, Fitness, and Sports, Sixth Edition (McGraw-Hill). He earned a B.S. from East Stroudsburg State College (1962), a Master of Education degree from Ohio University (1963), and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland (1968), with a doctoral dissertation on the effects of alcohol as a possible means to enhance strength and endurance. He's an accomplished marathon runner, placing first in his age group numerous times in the Marine Corps Marathon, which merited his selection in the Marine Corps Marathon Hall of Fame in 2001.
