Library Journal
Accurate information about nutrition can be difficult to find, especially concerning women. This book offers comprehensive information based on current research rather than popular fads. It provides an overview of basic nutrition principles, explaining the roles of vitamins, minerals, protein, and fiber in the diet and discussing the Recommended Dietary Allowances and the Food Pyramid. Somer, a dietician, discusses the Healthy Woman's Diet, offering advice on eating to maintain health, reading labels, and dining in restaurants and fast food establishments. She also provides information on nutrition during pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause, and athletic competition, as well as diets for specific diseases, i.e., diabetes, arthritis, and various cancers. Although The Mount Sinai School of Medicine Complete Book of Nutrition ( LJ 11/1/90) provides more comprehensive coverage of clinical nutrition, this book is an excellent source for its intended audience. Highly recommended for consumer health collections.-- Barbara M. Bibel, Oakland P.L., Cal.
