Reviewer: Amy Hess-Fischl, MS, RD, LDN, BC-ADM, CDE (University of Chicago Medical Center)
Description: This update and extension of Nutrition, 4th edition, Insel et al. (Jones & Bartlett Learning, 2011) includes two new components not available in the earlier edition: MyPlate and the 2010 Dietary Guidelines.
Purpose: The purpose remains the same as the earlier version: to introduce concepts of nutrition to all students, regardless of their majors. This update still meets that purpose with an interactive approach and an incredible number of tips and examples to further illustrate the concepts. Digital course materials are also available.
Audience: The book is geared for all college students in all majors as well as those who have a special interest in learning more about nutrition.
Features: At a glance, this is still a colorful textbook, which makes it enjoyable to read, with a large number of tables and up-to-date references. It focuses on teaching behavior change, personal decision-making, and up-to-date scientific concepts. The interactive approach addresses different learning styles and engages readers to consider their own behavior in light of the knowledge they are gaining. The book covers all pertinent nutrition topics, including nutrients, guidelines, and digestion and absorption. Chapters include many interactive sections. The "Think About It" section at the beginning of each chapter poses questions for readers to consider how they would behave in the stated circumstances. The "Learning Portfolio" at the end of each chapter summarizes key terms as well as study points and questions. Chapters also include position statement summaries from major organizations, including the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association) on various topics such as vegetarian diets and nutrition and athletic performance. Another section, called "FYI," provides more in-depth information on controversial and hot topics. Of course, this update includes MyPlate and the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which the previous version was missing. As was the case with the earlier version, this one includes an online study guide, which provides exercises and questions to help further clarify the information.
Assessment: I enjoyed the original fourth edition of this book and this update makes me even more excited for students who have the chance to use this as a textbook or a reference. Its easy-to-read style makes learning fun again.
