Description: This is a review of the current research regarding nutrition and neonatal and infant disease. The first edition was written 12 years ago, so an update is certainly warranted.
Purpose: The purpose is to review the most up-to-date evidence that nutrition provided in utero and during infancy directly affects the lifetime of the individual. The book provides the current research on acute and chronic diseases.
Audience: The audience includes researchers and those specializing in infant/neonatal diseases, and the book presumes a very good working knowledge of the material.
Features: The focus of this volume is solely on various diseases. The first of the book's three parts covers a lot of ground, including growth and body composition in children with chronic disease, nutrition support use in a variety of chronic conditions, nutritional requirements in liver disease, as well as a chapter on celiac disease in infants. The six chapters in the second part cover gastrointestinal issues. The third part focuses on hormones and lipids. The chapter on diabetes, written by a researcher in the U.K., is very general with little practical information for healthcare professionals in the field. In fact, the focus of many of the chapters is current research.
Assessment: Overall, this is an interesting reference, but it should not be the sole resource for learning about these diseases in infancy.
