Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Amy Hess-Fischl, MS, RD, LDN, BC-ADM, CDE (University of Chicago Medical Center)
Description: This introductory textbook covers all basic aspects of nutrition, from nutrients, guidelines, and assessment to how nutrition affects each aspect of the life cycle. The previous edition was published in 2007, making this a welcome update.
Purpose: The purpose is to introduce concepts of nutrition to all students, regardless of their majors. This book meets the purpose with an interactive approach and plenty of helpful tips and examples.
Audience: Geared for all college students, this book is appropriate for students in all majors as well as for individuals who are interested in learning more about nutrition for themselves.
Features: At a glance, this is a colorful textbook, which makes it enjoyable to read, with a large number of tables and up-to-date references. It focuses on teaching behavior change, personal decision-making, and up-to-date scientific concepts. The interactive approach addresses different learning styles and engages readers to consider their own behavior in light of the knowledge they are gaining. The book covers all pertinent nutrition topics, including nutrients, guidelines, and digestion and absorption. Each chapter includes many interactive sections. The "Think About It" section poses questions for readers to consider how they would behave in the stated circumstances. Also included in each chapter are position statements from major organizations such as the American Dietetic Association on various topics like functional foods for example. Also included are key terms, key concepts summary and Quick Bites, fun facts about particular topics. A section called FYI provides more in-depth information on controversial and hot topics. An online study guide includes exercises and questions to further clarify the information.
Assessment: This book presents a lot of valuable information in an easy-to-read and easy-to-apply manner. Since nutrition is constantly changing, the fourth edition is a welcome one. It does not include the updated dietary guidelines, but that is not a major issue. The topics covered give students all the information they need to have a firm grasp of basic nutrition.
