About the Author

Dr. Scott A. Shikora is a Professor of Surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine and the Chief of Bariatric Surgery at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston. He attended medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. He did his surgical residency and Nutrition Support fellowship at New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston. He is a past president of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition and is on the Executive Council for the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Shikora is an Associate Editor of two surgical journals and has co-edited two nutritional textbooks.

This book presents the rationale for and techniques of enteral and parenteral nutrition support. It is part of a series on topics in clinical nutrition; other volumes deal with pediatric nutrition support and enteral feeding and, thus, significantly overlap with this text The purpose is to help clinicians understand the techniques of safe, effective parenteral and enteral nutrition support as well as the reasoning behind their use. The authors have emphasized the practical aspects, and the editors hope that this information will expand their use in medical practice. The book generally meets the worthy objective of providing practical, easy-to-read information for clinicians. In this era of increased emphasis on evidence-based, cost-effective medicine, however, it would have been desirable for some of the contributors to take a more critical look at the scientific and clinical evidence supporting the use of nutrition support in disease management. The intended audience is clinical nutritionists, including dietitians, nurses, pharmacists, and physicians. The authors are respected professionals in these disciplines from medical schools, academic health, centers, and hospitals in the United States and Canada. Several chapters contain useful black-and-white illustrations and tables. The appearance of the book is bland and could be improved by more figures and photographs. The references are generally current, but the number and pertinence vary greatly among chapters. As with many multiauthored books, the chapters vary in quality. Some provide excellent treatments of the material, but others are quite short and superficial. Some chapters are unfocused, emphasizing general aspects ofnutrition, rather than concentrating on filtration support. For example, the chapter on nutrition support in the obese patient deals mainly with general aspects of the pathogenesis, complications, and treatment of obesity with a minimal discussion of nutrition support in the ill, obese individual. The book is a useful introduction to nutrition support for the beginning practitioner, but it will not meet the needs of the advanced clinician.
