Purpose: The purpose is to provide a review and bibliography of current practical guidelines for nutrition intervention in various medical and surgical conditions of high-risk newborns. This, in turn, is expected to improve outcomes and quality of life for such infants.
Audience: The book is directed toward dietitians, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and others who provide neonatal intensive care. Because of the focus on nutrition assessment, diet protocols and nutrient doses, feeding schedules and guidelines for nutrition counseling, it will primarily appeal to dietitians. Physicians and experienced nutritionists might desire greater emphasis on pathophysiology and effects of drug therapy on nutrient utilization.
Features: The book is well designed, with a number of excellent black-and-white diagrams, tables, growth charts, and monitoring schedules. Case studies devoted to medical and surgical conditions at the end of each chapter clarify treatment issues. The text would be improved by the use of a few radiographs or photographs of infants of various degrees of maturity.

This book is limited in coverage of nutritional biochemistry, new technologies, and promising research approaches to neonatal nutrition. The authors of some chapters appear to blur the distinctions between premature low birth weight infants and sick term infants.
