Overview

There are millions of pacemaker patients in the world and this number is increasing. It is not unusual for these patients to be cared for by clinicians with no formal training in cardiac rhythm management devices.

While there are many excellent pacing and defibrillation books, they are nearly all written by physicians for physicians. The Nuts and Bolts of Cardiac Pacing is written specifically for non-cardiologists in a lively, intelligent and easy to follow style.

It emphasizes real-life clinical practice and practical tips, including illustrations from actual clinical settings. Each chapter concludes with a checklist of key points from each subject (“Nuts and Bolts”).

Building layer by layer on the fundamental principles and concluding with advanced concepts, The Nuts and Bolts of Cardiac Pacing is intended for a novice to appreciate overall concepts and for a seasoned veteran to turn to answer a specific question.

This book offers practical, reliable and objective information on cardiac devices – it’s easy to pick up, find what you need, and put down.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“The book is clearly laid out and well written. The text is divided into digestible chapters-ranging from indications to more complex aspects such as troubleshooting and sensitivity. The illustrations are of excellent quality and supplement the text well.

I recommend this text to any health professionals who wish to increase their knowledge on cardiac pacing.” - British Journal of Cardiac Nursing - June 2007

From The Critics
Reviewer: Karen S Yehle, PhD, MS, RN(Purdue University School of Nursing)
Description: This book provides the background and basics of single and dual-chamber pacing as well as the diagnostics and troubleshooting of cardiac pacing. Each chapter includes citations for further reading and a box with chapter highlights.
Purpose: Although there is no preface, the introduction to the book states the purpose is to provide the cardiac pacing nonexpert with useful and thorough information about cardiac pacing. The purpose is fulfilled as it is written in a manner that builds upon a basic foundation and advances to more complex topics.
Audience: The book is written for the novice or newcomer to cardiac pacing, rather than an expert or experienced practitioner who works with pacemakers on a regular basis. It would be challenging to comprehend the material for a reader who did not have a cardiovascular background and experience in ECG interpretation.
Features: "Topics addressed include implantable device codes, techniques used for implantation, and both single and dual-chamber pacing. A chapter on the history of pacing is quite interesting and gives readers a perspective on the advances in this area. The glossary and the index are easy to use and comprehensive. It is unclear if the listed readings are the only sources the author used to write the book. The summary box at the end of each chapter is very helpful for the casual reader who does not choose to read the entire chapter. "
Assessment: "This book is very useful, especially to novices in cardiac pacing, and it is written at an appropriate level. It is also easy to understand and provides readers (nonexpert) with sufficient detail and enough depth to form a foundation for the specialty area of cardiac pacing. "
