PreS-Gr 1 This insipid birthday story follows in the series of Nutty's Christmas (1984) and Nutty's Picnic (1986, both Morrow). It is both Nutty the squirrel's and a boy named Tom's birthday. After Tom's mother chases Nutty away from Tom's cake at their party in the park, Nutty climbs a tree to find his birthday present. In a misunderstanding about his birthday gift, Nutty winds up rescuing Tom's gift of a model airplane from the high branches of a tree. Nutty's real gift is a baby swing. Children hear the silly names of the children in the squirrel family, but to no avail, as they play no meaningful part in the story. Actually, there isn't much of consequence in the story at all. The illustrations are static. The colors are bright, but fall flat and do nothing to enhance an already weak plot. Leslie Chamberlin, Napa City-County Library, Calif.
