About the Test
What is the NYSTCE Multi-Subject Content Specialty Test and what is it used for?
The NYSTCE Multi-Subject CST (Field 002) must be taken by individuals seeking certification as a PreK-9 public school teacher in the State of New York. It is a criterion-referenced test, meaning that it is designed to measure a candidate's knowledge and skills in relation to an established standard, rather than in relation to the performance of other candidates. The explicit purpose of the test is to help identify for certification those candidates who have demonstrated the appropriate level of knowledge and skills that are important for performing the responsibilities of a teacher in the New York State public schools.
If I apply for licensure in New York after having prepared in another state, do I have to take the test?
Yes, you must hold a New York State certificate to teach in the state's public schools. Reciprocity under the Interstate Agreement of Qualification of Educational Personnel is limited to coursework requirements only. Also, it applies only to the first-level regular certificate a member state issues. You must complete any examination requirements a member state may have. How is the test content determined?
Each test in the NYSTCE program is designed to measure areas of knowledge called subareas. Within each subarea, statements of important knowledge and skills, called objectives, define the content of test. The test objectives were developed for the NYSTCE in conjunction with committees of New York State educators. Test questions matched to the objectives were developed using, in part, textbooks; New York State learning standards and curriculum guides; teacher education curricula; and certification standards. The test questions were developed in consultation with committees of New York State teachers, teacher educators, and other content and assessment specialists.
Who administers the test?
All the NYSTCE tests are administered by the New York State Education Department.
When and where is the test given?
The New York teacher certification exams are given throughout the year. A current schedule of dates can be found on the Web at http://www.nystce.nesinc.com. Click on "Before You Register" for information about dates, test sites, and all the information you need. There are currently 19 test sites across New York State, one in New Jersey, one in Canada, and one in Puerto Rico, with other test sites in cities across the U.S.

How to Use This Book
What do I study first?
We recommend beginning your study with the comprehensive chapter reviews. It is important to read over each review, noting crucial test-taking suggestions and insights. By studying each review thoroughly, you will reinforce basic skills that are vital to performing well on the NYSTCE Multi-Subject CST. After reviewing, take the practice test. This will familiarize you with the actual exam's format, procedures, and level of difficulty. An added bonus to taking this practice test is knowing what to expect on exam day.
Wisely scheduling your study time is also a key component to your success on the test. To best utilize your study time, follow our flexible study schedule at the end of this section. The schedule is based ideally on a seven-week program, but can be condensed if needed.
Format of the Multi-Subject CST
What is the basic format the NYSTCE Multi-Subject CST?
The Multi-Subject CST contains approximately 90 multiple-choice questions and one constructed response (written) assignment. The content of the test is organized into subareas. These subareas define the major content domains of the test. Subareas typically consist of several objectives. Objectives provide specific information about the knowledge and skills that are assessed by the test. Each objective is elaborated on by focus statements. The focus statements provide examples of the range, type, and level of content that may appear on the test. Test questions are designed to measure specific test objectives. The number of objectives within a given subarea generally determines the number of questions that will address the content of that subarea on the test. In other words, the subareas that consist of more objectives will receive more emphasis on the test and contribute more to a candidate's test score than the subareas that consist of few objectives.
Scoring the Multi-Subject CST
The approximate percentages of the test corresponding to each subarea are as follows: Subarea I is 21%; II is 18%; III is 13%; IV is 15%; V is 8%; VI is 8%; VII is 7%; VIII-which includes the constructed-response assignment-is 10%.
An examinee's performance on a test is evaluated against an established standard. The passing requirement for each test is established by the New York State Commissioner of Education based on the professional judgments and recommendations of New York State educators.
The following characteristics guide the scoring of responses to the written assignment: (1) Purpose-fulfill the charge of the assignment, (2) Application of Content-accurately and effectively apply the relevant knowledge and skills, (3) Support-support the response with appropriate examples and/or reasoning reflecting an understanding of the relevant knowledge and skills.
The Multi-Subject CST scores are reported using a 1-through-4 scale, 4 being the best score. The total test score is reported in a range from 100 to 300 and is based on performance on all sections of the test. An examinee's multiple-choice score and scores on any constructed-response assignments are combined to obtain the total test score. A score of 220 represents the minimum passing score. An examinee with a total test score of 220 or above passes the test. An examinee with a total test score below 220 does not pass the test. Candidates who do not pass a test may retake it as often as necessary until a passing score is achieved. Candidates must reregister each time they retake a test. Your test scores will be reported to you, the NYSED (and are automatically added to your certification application file), and, if applicable, the institution that you indicated when you registered. Your score report will be mailed on the score report date published in the Test Dates section of the NYSTCE Web site at http://www.nystce.nesinc.com.
Although you may not be familiar with tests like the Multi-Subject CST, this book will help acquaint you with this type of exam and help alleviate test-taking anxieties. Here are the key ways you can more easily get into the correct state of mind:
Become comfortable with the format of the Multi-Subject CST. Practice tests are the best way to learn the format. When you take a practice test, try to simulate the environmental conditions of the actual testing facility. Remember, you are in training for the Multi-Subject CST, and simulated testing conditions will only help you perform better. Stay calm and pace yourself. After simulating a test even once, you boost your chances of doing well, and you will be able to sit down for the actual test with much more confidence.
Read all the possible answers. Examine each answer choice to ensure that you are not making a mistake. Jumping to conclusions without considering all the answers is a common test-taking error.
Use the process of elimination. GUESS if you do not know. If you do not know the answer immediately after reading the answer choices, try to eliminate as many of the answers as possible. Eliminating just one or two answer choices gives you a far better chance of selecting the right answer.
Do not leave an answer blank. There is no penalty for wrong answers,
and you might even get it right if you had to guess at the answer.
Familiarize yourself with the test's directions and content.
Familiarizing yourself with the directions and content of the Multi-Subject CST not only saves you valuable time, but can also aid in reducing anxiety before the test. Many mistakes are caused by anxiety. It's simply better to go in knowing what you will face.
Mark it right! Be sure that the answer oval you mark corresponds to the appropriate number in the test booklet. The test is multiple-choice and is graded by machine. Marking just one answer in the wrong place can throw off the rest of the test. Correcting an error like this will deprive you of precious test time.
After the Test
When you finish your test, hand in your materials and you will be dismissed. Then, you are free. Go home and relax. Meet with friends. Go out to dinner. Or go shopping. Whatever you do, make it a great day! After all you have done to get this far, you deserve it!
