"The House of Night" is a series of books written by the mother and daughter team, P.C. and Kristin Cast. Their books involve a young vampyre named Zoey Redbird. Each book is rich in symbolism, folklore and mythology from various worldwide traditions. This companion book is a non-fiction look at the fictional account of Zoey's life woven by thirteen contributing authors and experts, each writing an essay reflecting upon a certain aspect of Cast's research and writings. Bryan Lankford writes in an easy going conversational style, instructing us in the language of metaphors used by children of the earth's elements. Amy H. Sturgis writes about her former hometown of Tulsa, which is Zoey's current hometown. Jordan Dane tackles Zoey's Native American Cherokee bloodline which ties beautifully with cultural traditions. Jeri Smith-Ready takes on the Raven Mockers and A-ya, which are a Cast created origin for a Cherokee myth, springing new breath for these created mythological figures. Jana Oliver gives a comprehensive account of tattoos through the centuries, tying into the crescent moon mark that appears on adult vampyres. Ellen Steiber strikes a cat loving chord describing cats as familiars and their goddess powers. P.C. Cast retells her voyage to Scotland searching for Cruithne Mythos (Celtic mythology) with a highlight involving a story of Sgiach's Castle and another with directions to a "hanging tree" and the beauty of shared wishes.
