Doody ReviewsReviewer: Mary Wright, MSN, CNS (University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center)
Description: This book is a concise reference text that supplies key clinical information needed for the nursing care of gynecological, obstetric, and pediatric patients. It can be carried in a pocket for quick access to needed information while performing patient care.
Purpose: This book is intended to be a portable and useful reference in the delivery of safe and effective health care. The authors are successful in meeting this objective. Nurses and nursing students that find portable, quick, easy-to-read references useful in the provision of patient care will use this book frequently.
Audience: This book is written for nurses and nursing students. It is useful for nurses who are new to gynecological, obstetric, or pediatric nursing. Nursing students in their clinical rotations will find this reference useful. Nurses that work in large hospitals with specialty units limited to only gynecologic, or obstetric, or pediatric patients may find that having a combined reference text to be a drawback. The authors' credentials infer that they are credible authorities on this book's subject matter but further information about work experience would be helpful.
Features: This book covers essential clinical information needed in the care of gynecological, obstetric, and pediatric patients. It is written in an outline format that is very easy and quick to read. It includes charts, diagrams, and illustrations that organize complex information in a quick, easy-to-read format. A shortcoming of this text is non-inclusion of NICHD fetal monitoring terminology that was adopted in 2005 by AWHONN and ACOG. Another key shortcoming is including newborn content in the postpartum section which makes this content difficult to find. Lack of coverage of current neonatal resuscitation guidelines is another shortcoming of this text.
Assessment: This book is especially useful for nursing students during clinical rotations in gynecologic, obstetric, and pediatric nursing as it is easy to find the key, pertinent information needed for nursing care.
