Overview

This is the remarkable story of Barack Obama's journey to the White House, as told by the greatest cultural recorders in the world, the staff of The New York Times. From the first mention of Barack Obama in its pages (when he was elected president of the Harvard Law Review), to his electrifying speech at the 2004 Democratic Convention, to the days and months of the hardfought, innovative campaign for Presidency, The New York Times has documented, recorded, and analyzed Obama in all the ways that he has irrevocably changed this country.

In twelve rich chapters, filled with award-winning photos and graphics, as well as text from Nobel Prize and Pulitzer—winning columnists like Paul Krugman and Thomas Friedman, and seasoned political reporters like Adam Nagourney, The New York Times tells Obama's unlikely and incredible journey from the beginning all the way to his inauguration as President of the United States. Jill Abramson, the managing editor of the Times will provide biographical text and Bill Keller, the executive editor, will pen the introduction. Throughout, there will be profiles of important figures in Obama's life and the campaign—Valerie Jarrett, Hillary Clinton, John McCain, his parents and grandparents, and Michelle Obama. Obama's own writing, from his memoirs and speeches across the country, will be included, along with what will surely be an iconic, groundbreaking speech—his Inauguration Day speech.

This book will be a treasured cultural document and the pinnacle of election coverage. This is the best of the best showcasing the most extraordinary political event of recent times.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The New York Times has been tracking the career of Barack Obama since 1990: "First Black Elected to Head Harvard's Law Review." In the two decades since then, the Times has documented the 44th president's career from his arrival in Washington to his electrifying speech at the 2004 Democratic Convention to his hard-fought campaign for our nation's highest office. Obama: The Historic Journey recaps that incredible achievement in 12 chapters featuring award-winning, four-color photos and graphics and commentary from Nobel Prize and Pulitzer-winning columnists including Paul Krugman and Thomas Friedman. An authoritative record of one of the most memorable political ascents in American history.
Library Journal

The New York Times teamed with Callaway Arts & Entertainment to produce this visually stunning, large-format volume, which showcases both the Obama campaign and the Times's own staff expertise on the subject. The photographs, from both documentary and color reproduction perspectives, are the best you'll find. Contributions by Times writers and editors includes both new pieces and reprints from the paper, with new biographical text by Jill Abramson going back to Obama's beginnings. The ending commentary by Thomas L. Friedman declares, "Let Reconstruction begin." Highly recommended.

Magnificent collection of historical events leading up to a great day for the United States of America with extraordinary text and spectacular photographs.

I bought this book primarily because I went to the inauguration and I wanted a book to capture the importance and the significance of the day. I got that in this book and so much more. I am impressed by the detail and the focus on so many aspects of President Obama's life and political career. I have loaned it to more of my Republican friends than I have my friends who are Democrats. All of the text is inspirational and very educational. The images are magnificent with terrific colors and details. There are so many touching photographs of the First Family as well as many great shots of other political leaders. More importantly, there are some great candid shots of "regular" Americans who were part of the historical inauguration. many of the photographs show the President, not only as a politician, but as a husband, father, friend and true American. This is a must-buy book for anyone who went to the inauguration or for anyone interested in President Obama. Historical buffs must add this publication to their personal libraries. This is a perfect book for all schools and universities as well. Every educational institution should have a copy of this book. The text of the President's Inaugural Address is included. The book is set up in several different parts. Many thanks to the New York Times and its staff for a magnificent and breathtaking publication. You captured my day at the cold January event weather beautifully.
