Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Samira Brown, MD (Ochsner for Children)
Description: This book addresses the psychological contributions to pediatric obesity and its complications in the context of current research and interventions, and proposes a comprehensive approach to improve obesity prevention and treatment programs.
Purpose: The purpose is to address the psychological and psychosocial effects of obesity on the pediatric population. In order to be effective in the prevention and treatment of obesity, any comprehensive program must address the psychological factors, which are often not considered.
Audience: The book is written for a wide audience that includes researchers, mental health professionals, and nutritionists, as well as primary care clinicians including pediatricians, family doctors, medical students, and residents.
Features: A discussion about why obesity is a multifactorial problem in the pediatric population, with its genetic, biological, societal, familial, and peer driven influences, begins the book. The second portion of the book focuses on psychological contributions to and complications of obesity. The final portion addresses what is being done currently and how to build on that by incorporating strategies to address the psychological factors. The best part of this book is the summary of recent literature on each topic and the plethora of resources and practical advice in the fight against obesity.
Assessment: As a primary care physician, I found this book useful for creating strategies for behavioral modification of the psychological factors of obesity treatment in my patients and their families. I think it will also be a useful resource for multidisciplinary teams, since it is written for a broad audience.
