Overview

Obsession by Jennifer Armentrout:

He's arrogant, domineering, and... To. Die. For.

Hunter is a ruthless killer. And the Department of Defense has him firmly in their grasp, which usually doesn’t chafe too badly because he gets to kill bad guys. Most of the time he enjoys his job. That is, until he’s saddled with something he’s never had to do before: protect a human from his mortal enemy.

Serena Cross didn’t believe her best friend when she claimed to have seen the son of a powerful senator turn into something...unnatural. Who would? But then she witnesses her friend’s murder at the hands of what can only be an alien, thrusting her into a world that will kill to protect their secret.

Hunter stirs Serena’s temper and her lust despite their differences. Soon he’s doing the unthinkable breaking the rules he’s lived by, going against the government to keep Serena safe. But are the aliens and the government the biggest threats to Serena’s life...or is it Hunter?

5 stars - A sexy Arum with a bad attitude and very talented

5 stars - A sexy Arum with a bad attitude and very talented hands will have you flipping those pages at top speed!

I must start with Hunter.  He will be compared to Daemon but he isn't Daemon.  His attitude is much worse than Daemon's.   A hired killer of Luxen for the DOD, Hunter makes no excuses for what he does.  So when the DOD put him on babysitting duty, he's pissed off.  You really don't want to piss Hunter off.  When he's mad, he is one powerful Arum.  But here's the deal, Serena doesn't put up with his attitude despite the fact that he can or may kill her.  She mouths off to him and he loves it.  She's feisty.  Might just be the only weapon he can't defeat.

Hunter really appeals to me.  He has the all male "I can kick your ass" attitude down and in his case is very true.  He does what he wants but the death of his sister has caused him to adjust what he wants.  Now he may have found someone else that changes what he wants.  Oh and this guy knows sexy.  There is so much sexy in this book.  As good a fighter as he is, he's a better lover and damn that's saying something.

Serena is a strong, feisty women in a small package.  I love how she stands up to him, despite her total inability to take him on in ANY way.  Doesn't stop her.  That appeals to me and him.  They're cute together.  Her stomping her foot (not really but you get the idea) and him laughing at her useless efforts.  While there is nothing funny about the death and insanity that Serena's life has taken, I found myself laughing at these two together.  Jennifer's use of humor to develop her characters into real people is just one of the reasons she is my favorite author.

The story starts off quickly and never slows down.  I was very impressed with how well this story stood on it's own without any need to know anything from the Lux series.  I was also so impressed with how much of what I had believed about the Luxen world was turned on it's head in this book.  The Arum are bad, right? Yeah, they are killers of the Lux but maybe not for the reason I thought.  There certainly are two sides to every story and damn if this isn't a  brilliant addition to the puzzle.

I think this book is supposed to hold me over until August when Origin comes out but it only made me WANT that book more.  Little hints were left that have me desperate to get more of the story.  I love this alien world and all it's complexity.

Overall, I loved it.  Couldn't get enough of it.  Wanted more.  I'm wondering if there will be more of this adult Arum/Lux world.  I hope so.  I would so be down for that.

If you've read the Lux series, then this is a must read NOW.  If you prefer the adult paranormal world, then this is a must read NOW.  If you love hot guys that turn their attitude into protectiveness, then this is a must read NOW.  Yeah, I think you're getting the point.  Read it NOW.

This book was outstanding! I feel like a lot of times authors try to rush a story, and you don't get it. I often wonder
how authors can make stories with such an un-realistic bond between a female and male.
With this book it make sense. I actually got the attraction
between Serena and Hunter. It was not rushed. I thought it was the perfect story of A bad boy SLOWLY
turning good. I mean what kind of girl does not want to read about a reformed bad boy!

    Swooning&wanting more

Let start with saying that this made me see everything differently! First, Hunter! It's like Daemon and Aiden smashed into the the body of an Arum. He's a total bad boy but has that sweet layer in him. And what he feels for Serena is similar to Daemon and Kate. He's protective but still sweet at times and it has to be that dang alien DNA making him so hot! Of course we can't forget Serena! Like Kate she doesn't really take bull crap. She loves Hunter from the very first look even though he is a d-head half the time. You can see them circling each other through the book till BAM they come together instantly. And of course this novel wouldn't be the same if Luc and Paris and a little of Daemon wasn't spinkled in! And of course that evil plan everybody is talking about is just too shocking! I don't know who the bad guys are anymore. We humans are stuck in the middle of two powerful yet arrogant group of aliens and all we can do is sit and wait because the gov't has decided to keep everything locked up! Thank you DOD! This book definetly gives you a different view of the Arum and keeps you on the edge the whole time! Love the book Jennifer! Keep up the good work!

For those who are unsure and because I have been asked numerous

For those who are unsure and because I have been asked numerous times about it, this is NOT a YA book. It IS set within the same "world" as the Lux series BUT these characters are adults who think and act like adults - just so you know.

I am a sucker for background stories and this was like a mini history lesson for the Lux series. Not only do I view the Luxen differently now, but I neverevereverever expected to like the tall, dark and shadowy Hunter. He has a potty mouth like nobody's business but he cracked me up! (He would have to curb that if he came to visit, but still.) He thinks he has this job in the bag but Hunter gets more than he bargained for with Serena. She's strong, loyal, feisty and has an aim that would give the best MLB pitcher arm envy.

Unsure of who can really be trusted, Hunter and Serena have no choice but to depend on each other. The longer they're together though the more dangerous the situation becomes and the harder their attraction is to deny. (insert super steamy parts) Hunter will be forced to choose between keeping his kind off the radar, protecting his heart and Serena safe, that's if he can keep from killing her himself.

    Impressed

I normally don't go for the alien romance but this book was enthralling. If your not sure give it a chance and I'm sure you will be happy with the purchase. I know I lost plenty of sleep trying to finish this one wanting to see what would happen next.

~Reviewed by ANN & posted at Under the Covers Book Blog

OBSESSION is a book packed with action and emotion. Armentrout blurs the line between good and bad and sometimes, not knowing is part of the thrill. ~ Under the Covers

Jennifer L. Armentrout takes us to the other side of her masterful creations. OBSESSION is the first adult book that focuses on the Arum. If you’ve read the Lux series by Armentrout, then you’re already familiar with the alien dynamics. This time though, we see the “bad guys” point of view and it’s just a bit more mature. There is sex and swearing – all the good things that we love in an adult novel.

Now if you haven’t read the Lux series yet (which is a YA series), I still think this book can be read without it. However, having read the others books, I do feel that you get a richer picture of the world and the characters that way. If you’re an adult looking to try it, then I say go for it. The Lux series is quite sexy compared to other YA books I’ve read. And if you’re a teen looking to try OBSESSION, just be warned that there is explicit sex and bad words that you probably already know anyways.

Onto the story now! Serena Cross’s friend has seen the unbelievable so she crosses it from her mind until she witnesses the death of her friend just minutes after. It’s all a shock to her, but her grief is consumed by the knowledge that something else is out there that isn’t quite human.

Hunter is a ruthless killer and unfortunately for him, the Department of Defense wants him to take care of Serena until they can figure out this whole mess. Hunter is baffled by these instructions because he doesn’t know how to care for anything other than himself. He takes lives, not protects them. However, on their first meeting, there is a certain kind of chemistry between them that surprises him. Hunter reacts the only way he knows how – by being a jerk to her.

This here reminds me a lot of Daemon and Katy’s initial dynamics so if you enjoyed that, then you will love this. Hunter is a man’s man. Not the cuddly kind, but in the presence of Serena you begin to see how his protective instincts soon reveal a gooey core.

There is great action in this book! Armentrout has a very vivid imagination and the action scenes fit her writing very well. With perfect pacing and an incredible amount of unique abilities, her characters are X-men on crack.

There was one thing that bothered me though about this book. I was expecting the writing to be different purely because of the adult nature of the book. It’s far more sexier and uses curse words. I get that and I don’t mind it at all, but I was hoping that the inner dialogue, especially from Serena’s POV, would feel more mature. She is in her early twenties and sometimes, I thought her mind was that of a younger teen. It works fabulously with her YA and NA novels, however, I wanted a little more maturity in terms of thought process from this heroine. An Adult book isn’t simply an adult book because of the presence of explicit sex and curse words. The workings of the mind are different and their values are different. I wanted more exploration of that in this book.

All in all, OBSESSION is a book packed with action and emotion. Armentrout blurs the line between good and bad and sometimes, not knowing is part of the thrill.

If you love the Lux series but like me you are an adult and kind

If you love the Lux series but like me you are an adult and kinda wanted more well her you go. And holy hell JLA has out done herself. I think this my favorite book ever written by her. I loved this book, words will not give this book justice. I love Jennifer's YA series and so I wasn't sure what to expect here but man oh man she did an amazing job. Watch out Daemon because I think I am more in love with Hunter!

Hunter is just hot. He is that sexy alpha male. He is a bad ass. He isn't sweet and cuddly. He is an arrogant bad ass and I love him. He has a lot of Daemon like qualities but we get to see him naked. ;) He is also an Arum and what we know of most Arum they are evil. Which most still are but we see there are a few good guys.Serena was awesome. She is feisty and even though she needs Hunter to protect her she isn't a damsel in distress granted she does make a few dumb decisions. But she doesn't let Hunter boss her around (unless its in the bedroom) and she excepts Hunter and all his darkness.

Not only is this book sexy its a great story. Serena accidentally got caught up in alien politics (no the book doesn't call it that, its just me) Hunter is there to do his job and protect her. We see more of behind the scenes of the DOD and see that Arum and Lux are not always the good or bad guys. But we all know my favorite part was the sexual chemistry and watching these two get it on!

We do get to see a some characters from the Lux series. Maybe not a whole lot of the one we are all dying to see but we do see him. We get a feeling for what is going to happen in Origin too. I think you could read this book without having read the Lux series but I think people who have read that series will definitely love this so much! Like I said before I can't even explain my love for this book, its just so freaking amazing! I never thought I would love books with aliens in it but Jennifer's aliens are just too damn sexy not to love, and Hunter is brings sexy to a whole new level. I hope we see more of him soon.

Had potential. The intelligence that could have gone into delving deeper into the non-sexual aspects of the story would have gone so much farther than the same old soft porn.

Another fantastic book from JLA! The Lux series is one of my fav

Another fantastic book from JLA! The Lux series is one of my favorites, so I was so excited to hear she was writing an adult book from the Arum side of things. And oh, man was this good!! Holy freaking hotness!! Hunter is the bad boy to the core, but he's still oh, so good!! And of course Serena has an awesome amount of snark that we know the author writes so well!! This was all sorts of awesome. It had my adrenaline pumping, laughing out loud, fanning myself, and swooning hard! The best part? Dual POV's!!

I will start with Serena. She is snark times twenty. She doesn't take crap from anyone, and the more you tell her to do something, the more she will fight it. Piss her off, she will throw things at you. Really though, she has just been taken away from her life and is now being protected by an alien. He infuriates her, and gets her all hot and bothered. She is very impulsive, doesn't listen well, and is stubborn as hell, but I totally loved her. She is also fierce and totally loyal to doing the right thing, even if it means putting herself at risk to do it.

Hunter is fan-freaking-tastic. Oh, my yum!!! Okay, so he's an ass, really he is, but he is a sexy, hot ass who is every bit as alluring as he is aggravating. He is seriously sex on a stick. He knows what he wants and he goes for it. Okay, so besides his deliciousness, he is badass. When things get complicated, he will go against everything to protect Serena. He finds that he is starting to care for her and when she is at risk he goes into super scary Arum mode!! He is a bit off putting at first, but since we get his POV too, we learn that he's not as much of a jerk as he comes off as... most of the time.

Besides the sexiness of this book, my favorite thing was the familiar characters from the Lux series. We don't get a whole lot of them, but it was nice how it ties in. Also there are little bits that give some insight into where the Lux series is possibly headed. It makes me super nervous and really excited at the same time. We learn a little more about the government and how they tie into things, and more about the history of the Luxen and Arums from the Arum side of things. Through the Lux series the Arum have always seemed liked the bad guys, but I think I may be having a change of heart. Not to say I don't like the Luxen, but things are definitely not good/bad for me anymore. I think it's all about the individuals.

This was super awesome. It was such a fun and sexy book. You don't need to have read the Lux series to enjoy this as it's just set in the same world, and adult. If you like books that bring on the steam, the laughs, the frustration, and adventure, this is definitely one to read! This was everything I was expecting and more. I want more of the adult part of this world!!

A 4.5 Stars Adult Spin-off of the Lux series!

This is Hunter and Serena’s tale. An Arum and a human, can you imagine? This is also definitely an adult installment in the Lux universe. You meet Hunter in the main series briefly and later on in Opposition where he plays a more pivotal role. You also see him with Serena and how much he cares for her and this is their story.

Serena’s friend witnesses a pair of Luxen arguing and discovers they’re not human. She confides in Serena and is later murdered before her eyes. The DOD steps in and orders Hunter to guard her and figure out if she knows anything more. When the DOD turns on her, Hunter has to make a choice.

This novel was nicely done! Of course, while it was nice to see that the villains aren’t all evil people-eating monsters, I wasn’t thrilled about reading this installment at first. However, the heat between Hunter and Serena nearly melt the pages of the book and you get a nice taste of how the other side see things. It made for a nice change of pace, the humanizing of the Arum. JLArmentrout did an amazing job with the adult interactions – she’s definitely not a one-trick pony.

Although I loved how feisty Serena was and how very, very dangerous Hunter was to her. This is the only book in the Lux universe however that I can remember one slight flaw – to me anyway. I felt the whole ‘lust-to-love’ moment went a little fast. One minute all he can think of is getting in her pants and is a bit possessive, next it’s all wham, she’s no longer in danger of being eaten. Other than that, though, I loved this installment! I’ll give it a 4.5 stars!

    I Also Recommend:

Not to be missed! I loved Jennifer L. Armentrout¿s Acknowledgeme

    Not to be missed!
I loved Jennifer L. Armentrout’s Acknowledgements, and I definitely count myself among the readers of the Young Adult Lux paranormal series who enjoyed seeing this aliens-are-amongst-us series in the adult playground.
The temptation to fill a review with copious quotes and favorite moments is hard to resist with any of her books and Obsession was no different for me both on the first read and this re-read. I loved Hunter as much as I have loved Daemon in each of the related Lux series books.
I could totally see what made Hunter so irresistible to Serena and why she described him like this, ‘he oozed that kind of dark sex appeal that made good girls do bad, bad things. Over and over again.’

It was such a trippy experience to discover that the Luxen & Arum alien species were NOT easily defined as good aliens versus evil aliens as we are led to believe by Daemon and his siblings in the Lux series books. From Daemon’s perspective, that was always just the way things were.
Now with Hunter's additional perspective as a hunter of rogue aliens for the Department of Defense (DOD), we see how complex this war between these two alien species really is.

As we learn in a scene with Hunter and two DOD officers, there is also some great foreshadowing in Obsession, nicely hinting at what's to come in Opposition, the 5th and final book in the YA Lux series book.  “I’ve told you all before. You think the Luxen are manageable because they’re purdy when they glow,
but they are going to mow right over the human race.” Chapter 3, Hunter

The DOD puts Hunter in charge with safeguarding Serena, a human female who has no idea that aliens live among humans with the government's knowledge and he is less than thrilled.
‘I was not happy about this. There wasn’t a patient bone in my body and the only reason I was ever around a woman was to sate a primal hunger. I didn’t watch over them. I didn’t protect them. It wasn’t in my nature, and the officers knew that. I wasn’t the good guy here.
There was a good chance I’d kill Miss Cross.’ Chapter 3, Hunter

The chemistry between Hunter and Serena is palatable, but there's a twist, of course!
‘Hunter’s lips didn’t touch mine, but it almost felt like they did. I could feel their coolness, and in the back of my mind I wondered how they would feel and taste.
And then, his mouth was on mine. His lips were cool and firm. My startled gasp opened my mouth to his. He tasted like winter snow and something dark and rich, like chocolate.
But he wasn’t kissing me. Hunter inhaled.’ Chapter 5, Serena

What ensues after this moment? Well a whole lot of witty dialogue and sexy innuendos which quickly pay off in a big way.
That coupled with the further insight we gain into the Luxen and Arum mythologies all combined into a really thrilling read.
It’s a must-read for fans of the Lux series, preferably after reading Opal (book 3) and easily readable for non-fans who prefer adult fiction only.
The Lux series recently came to an end with Opposition, the 5th & final book in the series, but I would love a spin-off series or a novella telling us how Hunter’s friend Dex (an Arum) and Eliza (a human female), became a couple.

Obsession can be read as an independent standalone or as a companion to the Young Adult Lux paranormal series.
Here's the order that I originally read it in as the Lux series and this standalone novel were being published:
     Obsidian-1, Onyx-2, Shadows-0.5, Opal-3, Obsession, Origin-4 and Opposition-5.
