Overview

Monona Quinn and her husband Doug are taking a relaxing vacation in the northwoods of Wisconsin. Mo's enrolled in a writing workshop, and Doug's resolved to learn to fish. Naturally, it's the perfect time to solve another murder... Pompous, self-important writer Fletcher Downs was supposed to be the writer-in-residence; he was supposed to teach a classroom full of hopefuls how to write a great mystery—but he hadn't intended to teach by example. Now Fletcher's dead, and Mo (and the other students at the writing retreat) are faced with a real-life mystery. Who killed their teacher, and will they strike again?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Murder upsets a Wisconsin writing conference in the engaging fourth entry in Cook's cozy series featuring do-it-all newswoman Monona "Mo" Quinn (Murder at Midnight, etc.). When Mo's husband, Doug, stumbles on the body of conference star attraction Fletcher Downs, an author whose personality offends fans as quickly as his books win them, there are plenty of suspects, starting with the students in the mystery writing class Downs was teaching. Mo once again puts her curiosity and news-seeking skills to good use, despite admonitions from Doug and Detective Sergeant Lafferty to let the law handle the investigation. Readers who like their mysteries relatively bloodless and leavened with a pinch of romance, humor and regional color should find this a perfect fit. (June)

Kirkus Reviews
The lights go out for the star attraction at a writers' workshop. Even though they know he's no Mr. Chips, organizers of the northwoods Wisconsin writers' retreat expect bestselling mystery author Fletcher Downs at least to go through the motions. Unfazed by their assumptions, the super-self-involved Downs concentrates on filling his pockets with his stipend and his bed with willing females, and then, at the end of two weeks, blowing Shepherdstown after expending as little pedagogical energy as possible. So when he doesn't appear for class, few of his pupils rue his absence or become alarmed when it's announced that he has been sidelined by homicide. For Monona Quinn, however, the situation is somewhat charged, since this is the fourth time she has been close at hand to murder most foul. Embarrassed at the string of cases she has cracked, Monona tries at first to resist the call of her inner Nancy Drew, but "poking around is her nature." Clearly, the student body alone provides her with an ample suspect list. In addition, tiny Shepherdstown offers a mother lode of secrets, lies and intriguing murder motives. All of which Monona discovers when, in due course, she sets to poking around. Amiable Monona (Twin Killing, 2007, etc.) is every bit as nosy as a good cozy heroine should be.
