Book 8 in the New Species series. While each New Species book is a standalone, the greatest enjoyment will come from reading them in series order. Dr. Allison Baker is obsessed with saving the comatose New Species male. She has tried everything and there’s only one option left. Alli will break every rule and put her life in danger by tempting 880 to wake, using only her feminine scent and touch. She just has to kidnap him and crawl into bed with him to make it work. 880 wakes in a different world with a small female who’s been sleeping beside him, caressing him and wrapping her sweet body around his, teasing his senses. He lies silent and still, listening and evaluating each arousing touch, fighting his body’s reaction. Hatred flares when he discovers she’s human, but Mercile stole everything from him so he decides it’s fair to take her in return. But things quickly change and he wants her at his side and in his bed. 880 has chosen a new name—Obsidian—the personification of dark and dangerous. He’ll fight them all to keep Alli. No one will stand in his way. Reader Advisory: This story has graphic sexual language and scenes - no closed bedroom doors (or other rooms) here!

A Different Twist on a New Species Story. I have enjoyed all of the New Species books, especially Valiant and Fury. But it seemed like all of them had the same basic storyline; they meet, they are attracted to each other, had sex, the human female gets kidnapped or pregnant, they end up as mates. This story is different. Mercile doesn't make an appearance at all, no human female kidnapping, no pregnancy. I liked it. Alli becomes obsessed with Obsidian while he's in a coma and she is his doctor. Nothing they do can get him to wake up, so Alli wants to try something different. She thinks getting Obsidian to bond with a female via scent will give him a reason to want to wake up. When Justice and Tiger both reject her plan, she takes matters into her own hands and kidnaps Obsidian from Reservation. Her plan works, he wakes up, but Alli is in major trouble with the NSO for kidnapping him. I liked the different type of storyline, and there is a lot of appearances of characters from previous books. I especially loved seeing Breeze again. I hope she gets her own story soon. There are more primate species in this book than in others. I'm hoping that means that we will have a story about a primate species from Laurann in the near future. The only thing I didn't like is it seemed to end abruptly. Alli and Obsidian got together, but Alli's future and status in the NSO was never resolved. But overall, a good addition to the series.

I just started reading the new species series last week. This particular book was one of the last ones i read. I have to say that i was pretty disappointed in both obsidian and allison. It just seemed that halfway through the book they lost a lot of character. They just let everyone run right over them the closer the story got to the ending. It was almost as if the author just gave up on the book three fourths of the way through. I mean, come on, they are just leaving physical cages only to be forced into mental and emotional ones enforced by their own people. Not only did this book lower my opinion of obsidian, it also lowered my opinion of some of the main players (such as justice and fury) due to being so easily manipulated by humans and willing to cause such emotional pain to one of their own people.

Caveman Hot!!!!!!! I don't know about anyone else but Obsidian is one of my favorites. His blunt behavior and Alli's accommodating ways make for good, hot, fun reading. I even felt bad for her towards the end when she thought she wasn't needed anymore. Loved, loved, loved, this book.

I have all of the Species books and my favorite is Valent. This book didn't quite follow the usual theme (Mercile trying to get and test Species) and that's not a bad thing. I just wasn't as pleased with this story. I love all of the books and you should give them a try and discover how different Species can be! Enjoy! :)

After having been a faithful reader of all the New Species books, I have to say, this book wasn't worth the $6 I paid for it. There was almost no mention of the couples from the prior books - which is something I was hoping to have at least a little of in this book. And ultimately, there was no build up, the guy was crude and hard to find even remotely attractive, and there was no conflict...at all. Overall, I have to say, I was disappointed in this installment of the New Species series.

I hated this book the first time I read it, but decided to try again. Rereading it was more enjoyable, but still my least favorite of the series. I still feel that Dr. Allison is a weak female character and Obsidian is too one dimensional (sex, sex, sex). I can't wait till the next book to see who finds love next time and hope the characters are more interesting.

Carmen Terronez's review Aug 29, 12 · edit bookshelves: laurann-dohner Read on August 28, 2012 This was a great read and Laurann Dohner has got me hooked! From the beginning to the end you fall head over heels in love with *880* (Obsidian). He's in a coma and Dr. Allison Baker is very concerned, obsessed as to why he hasn't woken up after his body has already healed. Determined to get to the bottom of the mystery that is *880* she makes a plan and kidnaps him from Homeland after Justice North and Tiger have denied her permission to "Scent" her to try and wake him. But when Obsidian does the tables of obsession turn. He's K9, aggressive, grieving, and he hates humans. Laurann pairs two lead characters who have lost and are needing. No capture and release for the female heroine was a plus, the story wasn't in need of that it flowed well without it. It was very hard to have to put the book down once I started. New Species is an excellent series!

Love Obsidian. This book was a great overall read. It still leaves me with a few questions though. Still it was a enjoyable book. Love this author. I will definitely read more in this series.

It was an ok book. I didn't care for it as much as her other books. I wish some parts had been different but a nice easy read.

O. M. G. This series just keeps getting better and better! I think I'm in love with Obsidian. He is one hot total alpha male. I thought the other species males were alpha but Obsidian topped all of them and all I can say is dahem! Allison was his perfect mate and loved how he treated her but didn't let him get to demanding. The dialogue in this book had me laughing and the heart wrenching parts well have tissues. I can't wait to read the next book. Not a stand alone book.

This was pretty good. He was locked away and tortured by humans his mate was killed in front of him. He was rescued but was in a coma from the damage he did to himself trying to get to his mate and he was wasting away and they were contemplating taking out his feeding tube. The dr treating him refused to give up on him and took drastic measures that got her in trouble with the species but she succeeded. He wasnt sure of her at first but then she belonged to him and was ready to kill anyone who tried to go near her or touch her. Ok that being said I think they did a good job with his character on that aspect there were times I was more ticked off at the species than having him be rehabilitated to fit in with society. I had issues that the psychologist was a bad guy but nothing more was done with it. I had issues with..ok you want to care for your fellow apecies yet you want her to go elswhere and work for the ones responsible for killing his mate...what. No really...what if one of those monsters was hurt and she had to take care of them, with how he was there is no way that would have not been more of an issue. I was waiting for something to happen to her at that prison either by the nasty psychologist or the inmates or guards and he would rescue her and they would take off to live in that wilder area. BUT that didnt happen I wont give away what did happen but I feel like I was gipped of a story. Aside from that it what was written was well written. I will try her other stories.
