Barnes & Noble - Lisa Zhito
It's obvious indeed that gold-selling boy band Plus One have grown up, writing, performing, and even producing on a couple of cuts -- it's no more prefab boy band for these guys. For those who don't read liner notes, the music -- more aggressive, full of thumping, throbbing synth lines and passionate vocal growls -- lets you know these guys are serious. Lyrically, Obvious charts some more mature territory, and without preachiness, these songs urge listeners to be, well, obvious about their faith. On the opening track, "Camouflage," they resist being "camouflaged" Christians, instead touting a bold faith that smacks of Bob Briner's "roaring lambs" call to arms. "Kick Me" ...

"Kick Me" is another aggressive track that reminds listeners of the Christian obligation to help their brothers and sisters and not kick them when they're down. It's also Obvious that Plus One's sophomore set is by no means a perfect collection. Many of the songs have the same pounding beat and melodic lines, but that's tempered with top-notch ballads and mid-tempos like "Let Me Be the One" and "Forever." In the end, though, it takes guts to break out of the boy-band box, and Obvious shows nerve aplenty.
All Music Guide - Tim Smith
The year 2000 was a groundbreaking year for the inspirational pop quintet Plus One. Their debut release, The Promise, went gold in ten months' time, opening up the door for them to appear on such popular television shows as Touched by an Angel, Days of Our Lives, and Live With Regis and Kelly, as well as hitting 62 cities as the opening act for contemporary Christian vocalist Jaci Velazquez. The Gospel Music Association also honored the group as the 2001 New Artist of the Year. Their sophomore offering, entitled Obvious, takes Plus One to the next level. Featuring a who's who list of top-notch producers, including such names as, Peter Zizzo, Tedd T., Matthew Gerrard, Klaus/Jeeve & Miklos Malek, Guy Roche, Bernie Herms, Howard New, and Peter Kipley, this project delivers a more assertive, beat-infested, guitar-driven sound. This fact is readily noticed through tracks such as the opening song, "Camouflage," "Kick Me," "Use Me," and the ballads "Forever," "Let Me Be the One," and "You." This project should only assist Plus One on their continued upward spiral to the land of superstardom.
