Overview

Occupational Health is the promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of physical, mental and social well-being of workers in all occupations by preventing departures from health, controlling risks and the adaptation of work to people, and people to their jobs.

Occupational Health Nursing has now become a major reference text on occupational health nursing courses. It is the only book on the market written entirely by occupational health nurses for nurses. This 3rd edition brings the book up to date with new legislation, guidance and developments.

This book can be used for quick reference purposes or as a resource for more detailed research and projects. Each chapter stands alone and authors have been chosen for their particular expertise in the topic.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Sheila T. Fitzgerald, BSN, MSN, PhD (Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health)
Description: This book provides an exploration of current issues in occupational health, integrating a historical perspective along with practice, management, regulatory, and research issues. An impressive and knowledgeable group of nurses with varied expertise in the field of occupational health present updated and expanded discussions on a rapidly growing and important field of health — worker health. The first edition was published in 1997.
Purpose: This book serves as a reference for nursing students, practitioners/clinicians, and educators who have an interest in the practice of occupational health in varied settings. It presents thought-provoking ideas and serves to stimulate the practitioner to consider innovations in the field. Thus, the author's objectives are noteworthy and timely.
Audience: The book is written for nursing students and occupational health nurses and practitioners as well as educators. The editor is very credible and she has gathered an impressive list of contributors who knowledgeable about occupational nursing in the U.K.
Features: Since the field of occupational health is changing rapidly, this book discusses the changing role of the occupational health nurse and introduces the increasing need for nurses to be involved with management of occupational health and safety services as well as policy setting and research. The author presents timely information concerning occupational health and safety legislation, disability, and the important role of the nurse in health promotion, disease prevention and the rehabilitation of the employee to improve return to work. This book provides an important resource for nurses in the U.K., but as an American educator and researcher, I know this book will serve as a meaningful addition to my library.
Assessment: This second edition provides an important contribution, particularly as an expansion of the first edition. Many of the chapters parallel and complement the main textbook on occupational health nursing compiled by Rogers, Occupational Health Nursing: Concepts and Practice (W.B. Saunders, 1994).
