Overview

This second edition has been fully updated with four new chapters and is aimed mainly at students of occupational health nursing but will also be of interest to qualified occupational health nurses. There is an increasing interest in this speciality of community nursing which is expanding and developing with the encouragement and support of the Department of Health and the Health and Safety Executive. The book is a topical reader written entirely by nurses working in the field. It aims to be thought-provoking, stimulating and topical. It starts by setting occupational health nursing in the international context and Iooking at European developments in particular and how these relate to developments in other areas of the world, such as the Asia Pacific Region and the United States. The book then goes on to look in detail at some of the core functions of occupational health nursing and essential aspects of effective occupational health services such as writing and developing policies and procedures, setting standards and issues of quality and audit. This is followed by an in-depth look at some practical applications of the speciality using case studies in the areas of health promotion, mental health, rehabilitation and health assessment. The focus throughout is on the use, wherever possible, of practical examples and experience from the practice of occupational health nursing.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Sheila T. Fitzgerald, BSN, MSN, PhD (Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health)
Description: This book provides an exploration of current issues in occupational health, integrating a historical perspective along with practice, management, regulatory, and research issues. An impressive and knowledgeable group of nurses with varied expertise in the field of occupational health present updated and expanded discussions on a rapidly growing and important field of health — worker health. The first edition was published in 1997.
Purpose: This book serves as a reference for nursing students, practitioners/clinicians, and educators who have an interest in the practice of occupational health in varied settings. It presents thought-provoking ideas and serves to stimulate the practitioner to consider innovations in the field. Thus, the author's objectives are noteworthy and timely.
Audience: The book is written for nursing students and occupational health nurses and practitioners as well as educators. The editor is very credible and she has gathered an impressive list of contributors who knowledgeable about occupational nursing in the U.K.
Features: Since the field of occupational health is changing rapidly, this book discusses the changing role of the occupational health nurse and introduces the increasing need for nurses to be involved with management of occupational health and safety services as well as policy setting and research. The author presents timely information concerning occupational health and safety legislation, disability, and the important role of the nurse in health promotion, disease prevention and the rehabilitation of the employee to improve return to work. This book provides an important resource for nurses in the U.K., but as an American educator and researcher, I know this book will serve as a meaningful addition to my library.
Assessment: This second edition provides an important contribution, particularly as an expansion of the first edition. Many of the chapters parallel and complement the main textbook on occupational health nursing compiled by Rogers, Occupational Health Nursing: Concepts and Practice (W.B. Saunders, 1994).
