Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
Ocean animals adapt to their environment by using special ways of moving, hiding, and catching food. This nonfiction text in the "A+ Amazing Animal Adaptations" series explains in short paragraphs how these animals adapt regarding their body parts, body coverings, and behavior. Large color photographs show these animals in action under the water. The first section about body parts contains the shark with its powerful teeth and tail, a penguin with its flippers, and an anglerfish with its spine. Flounders have two eyes to watch for danger, and sea stars have one eye on each arm. Anemones catch fish with their tentacles. Sometimes a question is asked and then answered, which promotes interest and provides variety in the narrative. The section about body coverings describes features of a sea dragon, crab, octopus, sea slug, glass squid, and turtle. The behavior section includes facts about dolphins and sea horses. The text also includes a table of contents, a glossary, an index, a "Read More" section, and Internet sites. The text is designed to be read aloud to a preureader or to be read independently by an early reader. The simple text and excellent photographs make this a good resource for science curriculum.
