Overview

Yellowcard makes its major-label debut with Ocean Avenue. This SoCal punk-pop fivesome slightly softens the edges found on its previous two albums in what is an attempt to win over the TRL crowd. Regardless of the reasons why, Yellowcard works with that familiar formula of spastic, crunchy guitar licks, emo-inspired lyrics, and vocals tailored for that tinny, whiny effect. Some say it's been done before, and by 2003 it surely had, but Yellowcard seems to not give a care about it because Ocean Avenue delivers despite of its catchy recipe. The 13-song set switches in mood and tempo for a layered, dynamic sound, and vocalist Ryan Key could very well chasten Dashboard Confessional's Christopher Carrabba about keeping things short and simple. Songs like "Way Away" and "Empty Apartment" thrive on the basics of rock & roll -- foliated guitars weaved in between high-speed percussion. But that's not all. Yellowcard has a secret component when it comes to crafting its own punk-inspired presentation. Violinist Sean Mackin is impressively skilled, and his talent allows Yellowcard to have a bit of an advantage in making something sound original and fresh. "Believe" and the acoustic guitars of "One Year, Six Months" are proof of that. Ocean Avenue isn't exactly outstanding in the sense that this band has done something outrageously different, but it is a worthy collection of songs with a real heart; that alone shows that Yellowcard is on to something solid.

Usually i go for the cd i know i will like everysong. usually top 40 rated. but i took a chance on yellowcard a while back. i loved their singles that hit the airways a while back. This cd Ocean Avenue is wicked awesome. For the first few days its the only cd i listened to. I couldnt get enough of the wicked awesome songs. even songs that werent airplay sounded like the whole cd should be radio rocked. I love this cd and the best song for a mellow day is empty apartment. the best song for a break up song is only one. and the best wake up song in the morning has to be way away. a great party starting song is miles apart. it has soo many unique uses of instruments. its a wicked cd that totally is fetch.

To start off, the cd when i first listened to it was awesome! The cd had something i've never heard in a punk rock band... a violin! The cd was dedicated to a friend of the bands who was lost in a car accident. I found that really touching. And the song "View From Heaven" was written about their friend. The songs each had different meanings to me. One was about their friend in heaven, another was about September 11th! I'm sure each song might have a different meaning to someone else... but i found the cd to be a very personal look at their lives.

The Ocean Avenue album should go top of all your CD collections, it is really amazing. They really show their quality to be and emo band while following a punk path. An amzing album in its own genre with its violin. Rock On! Buy this now

Wow out of all the albums I have this sticks out the most!!!! Besides the fact that it has a violin and that the members are really cool, i don't have to skip tracks. Dude I give this 5 stars all the way. Also the songs tell us about the bands challenges and other interesting things which you can sort-of relate with!

This CD rocked my socks. "Way Away" starts it off right with the electricity that goes straight to the feet. I shamelessly danced when I first heard the song. :b These guys are awesome, but what sets them apart from the rest is their violinist. The violin brings the element to their music that personalizes the song, to me. If you are looking for a new band to try out, try these guys. They aren't permanently in my cd player for nothing.

Yellowcard's newest CD is a beauty. Filled with lyrics about friendship, love, and hope, all strug together with great music. :-D Excellent violin yet again, courtesty of Sean, YC's rockin Violinist. Though a violin in a band isn't the most popular idea, the mix of normal rock instruments and the melodic violin work great together. "Believe" especially shows the nice violin sound. Just buy it, folks. We've all seen Yellowcard on MTV by now, and we're starting to realize they've got some serious talent (understatement of the year-these guys rock!)! YELLOWCARD RULES!

Ocean Avenue is by far my all-time favorite CDs. It is amazing from beginning to end. It is the type of CD that you pop in, listen to the whole thing, and then hit repeat to hear it again. I've had it in my car CD player for months at a time. Yellowcard's sound is so unique because of their use of the electric violin. It is not your average punk band. If you buy this CD you will not be disappointed!...and if you like this CD, wait until you see them live! You will be hooked for life.

Ocean Avenue is by far the best cd. The cd shows what great musicians they are. The violin adds an interesting and important sound to the songs. The cd shows how the band has improved over the past few years.

Yellowcard is such a great band. Their songs are all awsome. And the best thing is they are not like any other group around. With their violin, giving there songs a more classicial theme, it makes them the only band of it's kind. From catchy melodies from Ocean Avenue to the loud and hype tunes of Way Away, Yellowcard is a must get for the holidays!!!!

when i first yellowcard, i only liked the song Powder...the others sounded really retarded....I bought the Ocean Aveneue cd hoping that they would have good songs. Way Away is a good opening song. That single is just awesome. The whole CD is basically good. It has good hard emo songs like "Way Away" "Life Of A Salesman" and "Miles Apart". Then they have nice popish songs with "Only One", "Ocean Avenue", and "Empty Apartment". Then songs like "back home", "one year, six months", and "inside out" that are just perfect. They did really good.

Ocean Avenue, Yellowcard's newest album, is a stellar addition to their already impressive list of music. Yet again, Sean Mackin's violin rocks out, complementing the band's up-beat rhythms with a touch of beauty. The lyrics steer clear of the sad and depressing, and instead, beeline for the uplifting and slightly romantic. Way Away, their single, is a great song, featuring some aggressive music with a speedy violin part. Ocean Avenue, YC's next masterpiece, is another awesome song worthy of praise. My only regret is that "Believe" (my favorite song) was never out in time to be America's September 11th Tribute song, as it is a powerful, beautiful song about the men who sacrificed it all for the sake of others. The song tells of how we can work together to make "everything alright" in the end. Bottom line is, Ocean Avenue is a fantastic album, which comes as no big suprise. Listen to Yellowcard=Be Happy :-D
