Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
Young children are curious about what lives in the world's oceans. The question is how to introduce this watery world's occupants to very young readers? This book, part of Black Rabbit Books' new "I Want to Know More About" series, chooses to provide readers with randomly(?) chosen ocean critters, some familiar, some not so familiar, with colorful photo illustrations, easy-to-read text and charts detailing size compared to a dollar bill or the average four-foot-tall child. The publisher's purpose for this series is to "introduce a variety of interesting animals to young readers." First, the book provides a world map with continents listed in bold uppercase letters and countries in bold lowercase. Readers are encouraged to see if they can locate each animal they read about on this map. After simple information about where in or near the ocean animals live plus what ocean dwellers might eat, the book details twelve ocean animals. The first, a clownfish, is most easily identified thanks to Disney's "Little Nemo" movies, but did you know that clown fish are so named because their bright coloring resembles the paint a clown applies to his/her face? Clownfish, the text explains, can successfully hide in the stinging tentacles of sea anemones because they have a protective slime on their bodies. Also, predators are afraid to catch clownfish because of the danger of being stung. The author presents clownfish, coral, great white shark, hermit crabs, jellyfish, Moray eel, octopus, sperm whale, squid, starfish and walrus. Each two-page spread includes close-up, color photography, size chart, colorful pictures and plenty of information. Finally, the book features a list of books to read for more information, places to explore including the Monterey Bay, New York and [Chicago's] Shedd Aquariums, web sites to visit, glossary and index.
