Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
As part of the "Eyewitness 3-D" series, this title comes with a mirror-viewer, which may survive in a home library, but not in a circulating library where its disappearance can almost be guaranteed. That's okay, really, because it's more of a gimmick than an aid. How many people, after all, want to rest their noses on the top of the viewer while peering determinedly down one--and only one--side of the mirror? Tricky, at best. This slender book tantalizes readers by presenting some of the ocean's more intriguing critters, accompanied by a few facts, all sure to spark curiosity. By darting from tidal pools to coral reefs, from plankton to creatures of the deep, the book conveys the immensity of the ocean and the seemingly limitless variety of life within it. All together, 25 different topics are touched on, most of them meaty enough for an entire book. Some will criticize this book's lack of focus, but it's an enjoyable visual introduction to the sea, which, after all, covers 71% of our planet. 1999, Dorling Kindersley, Ages 5 to 9, $16.95.
