Overview

Almost three-quarters of our planet is covered by water, and these watery worlds are home to an amazing variety of plant and animal life.

The open oceans may appear to be empty of life but here we find fast-swimming sailfish, fearsome sharks, massive whales, and huge sea turtles. There are also schools of smaller fish, such as herring and mackerel, as well as vitally important microscopic animal and plant plankton.

With vivid photographs and clear text, Ocean Life is a fascinating introduction to this important environment.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Julia Beiker
Our young adventurers now board a boat to venture into the vast world of the open ocean and what lies miles away from the shore. They discover that a great white shark can smell a drop of blood from three miles away while a school may contain up to a thousand fish. One of the strangest facts seems to be that a whale's tongue weighs as much as an entire elephant. The format changes from individual animals to more of a grouping as a way to demonstrate the differences and similarities. The text is divided into colorful segments thus providing information in small bit size facts while the vivid photographs show the vast world below the ocean. At the front, the content page will facilitate those undertaking book reports. Page 28 offers more information about ocean life. Vocabulary definitions at the end of the text match up with the bold-faced words found throughout the book. This reference book should be in any collection for readers interested in the oceans. This book is part of the "Watery Worlds" series. Reviewer: Julia Beiker
