Before he was Darren Shan's master...

Before the War of Scars...

Larten Crepsley was a teenager. And he was sick of the pomp and circumstance of fusty old vampires telling him what to do. Taking off on his own with his blood brother, Wester, Larten takes off into the world to see what his newly blooded vampire status can get him in the human world. Sucking all he can out of humanity, Larten stumbles into a violent, hedonistic lifestyle, where cheats beckon, power corrupts, and enemies are waiting.

This is his story.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Ann McDuffie
Before Larten Crepsley was a vampire general and Darren Shan's master in the series Cirque du Freak, he was a newly-blooded vampire youth. Cut loose by his master to explore the world of humans, Larten stumbles into a violent, hedonistic lifestyle, filled with drunken revelry, gambling, and bloody battles. In this gore fest, he wanders aimlessly for years, meets up with various vampire friends, feasts at blood-stained human battlefields, crosses fangs with enemy vampires, and then moves on to his next adventure. Despite enough gruesome suspense to satisfy horror lovers, the plot meanders just as Larten does. Short on character depth and long on exposition, the story skims over huge spans of time, but what are a few decades in vampire years? Characters are briefly introduced and then disappear, presumably to re-emerge in later volumes, making an unsuitable stand-alone title. It is advisable to first read the opening book in the series, Birth of a Killer (Little, Brown, 2010/VOYA February 2011), which explains Larten's vampire beginnings and introduces his master and other important characters. Although the original series was written for middle-school readers, this series targets a somewhat older audience. References to drinking and debauchery may cause objection; however, fans of Cirque du Freak will be sucked into the story of Larten's teen years and the cliff-hanger ending guarantees further adventures. AWESOME!!!

I have not finished reading the book, but it is an awesome book so far. I was reading it not too long ago and I lost track of time. I love the whole, "The Saga of Larten Crepsly" theme. It keeps me reading, and I can not put the NookColor down for ten minutes without reading this book. I do not even mean to read this book for a long time, and it always seems to keep me reading. I just hope Darren Shan can make these books better and better. I have been reading his books since 2009 (when I started reading the "Cirque Du Freak" Series) and I have been a fan of his since then. DARREN SHAN! DO WHAT YOU DO BEST! KEEP WRITING BOOKS!!!

Made me want to read more, just as Cirque Du Freak did.

Shan continues to twine together a wonderful tale that makes you want to keep reading. I love Cirqu Du Freak, and I hopethat i will love this series just as much. I miss darren (the character, not the author), but Larten makes up. I hope to stick with him till The end .

    The Story of Larten Crepsley

Once again Darren Shan shows us that there was a whole other side of Larten that we didn't know. I actually think this one is better than its predecessor! I can't wait to read the next one!
