This is a counting book with extraordinary flair, from the first big fish to 100 little silver fish swarming around a treasure chest overflowing with gold coins. The silk batik paintings light up pages that spill glowing color to the edges; some pages have borders and on others the colors of the sea wash the entire surface. There are flat fish, thin fish, fat fish, and eels, sea horses and an octopus--the perfect choice for number 8. The book features a sea creature for each number up to 20, then on to 30 purple fish, 40 golden fish, 50 pink-and-green-spotted fish and so on by 10s to 100. Little purple fish share a sandy, rocky ocean bottom with sea horses, and dark and light fish share space, subtly integrating counting lessons with social ones. Fans of MacCarthy's 17 Kings and 42 Elephants will be delighted to see her latest work using the same distinctive technique. This one makes a fresh splash of its own. Ages 3 - 7. (Mar.)

PreS-- Striking batik paintings are both the strength and weakness of this underwater counting adventure. The pictures are bright, busy, and fluid, with swirling forms and configurations reflecting aquatic motion. The only text is the number (in numerals) of sea horses, octopus arms, or fish (beautiful and fanciful pink- and green-spotted fish, transparent fish, rainbow-colored fish) to be counted. Often several groups intermix on a 2-page spread, as in the illustration of 30 little purple fish wiggling among 20 sea horses as strands of seaweed eddy around them. Visually exciting, the book rides a fine line between being a challenge and creating frustration. It's almost impossible for novice counters to keep track of 100 shimmering, silver fish overlapping each other as they dart among golden coins from a sunken treasure chest. Lovely to behold, the book's best use might be as a suggestion of general concepts of mass (e.g. How big is a group of 30? How much smaller is a group of 20?) rather than as an exercise in counting individual items. --Liza Bliss, Worcester Public Library, MA
