Oceanborn

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Antti J. Ravelin
First of all, Oceanborn is a huge step when thinking about Nightwish's debut album, Angels Fall First. All the elements of folk music and ambience are forgotten, and instead Nightwish have concentrated on using Tarja Turunen's wide voice and playing pure heavy metal. Or, well, another description could be opera metal. Drama and a variety of melodies are used and effective, but overrule all expectations. Songs are catchy, but they have a long lifetime. Also, the whole band does great work: even though they seem like another Dream Theater-wannabe, Holopainen and Vuorinen use their instruments with patience and don't slope into unneeded tricking. So everything seems to be...

So everything seems to be alright, but the album as a whole lacks a little bit of diversity, and sometimes falls into repeating itself. The songs are, however, very strong, and the album as a whole works great. Oceanborn is, so far, Nightwish's most successful album.

    One of the best

This is definitely one of Nightwish's best albums, and one of the best I've ever heard. Tarja sounds amazing as always.

One of the best melodic metal CDS, ever!!!

This CD is the best melodic metal CD out there! Nightwish is fronted by operatic mezzo soprano Tarja Turunen, who can really sing(This is proven on Swanheart, Stargazers, and Sleeping Sun)! This CD starts out with Stargazers, a beautiful fast song about the universe. Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean and The Pharoh Sails to Orion feature guest death vocalist Tapio Wilska (From the folk metal band Fintroll). The insrumental Moondance boasts Russian influences, while Sleeping Sun has a Celtic feel to it. Tuomas Holopainen, the songwriter, outdoes himself on this album! If you like anything else by Nightwish, After Forever, or Sonata Arctica you are sure to apperciate this album!

    Nightwish, hevi ooppera!

This is one of the best albums they have. There's an amount of heay rock, then the slow, insturmental works. It's a very good album. Nightwish is just great on everything they do.

    Fantastic!!!

This is the best Nightwish-album ever... If you don't like "hard rock", listen to the two last songs... Just love this!! The first album I heard with Nightwish was Century Child and now I've heard them all... This on is the best!!!

    Nightmare is more like it.

What do you get when you cross an opera voice with a metal band? Noise. If you’re looking for a CD that will drive your parents insane, this is the one. Otherwise, save your money.

    The Best Female Vocals Ever!

Definitely one of the best album ever sung by a woman. Vocals are perfect, powerful. Songs are different kinds of. Keyboards are very very excellent.

    This album is really great!

I really think that this is the best Nightwish album so far. So, if anyone wants to listen to Nightwish for the first time, I'm sure that this is the album he or she should start with.
