Children's Literature
Part of the "Biomes" series, this title uses short chapters to address topics such as "World Oceans," "Ocean Climate," and "Ocean Animals, Plankton and Waves." Illustrated with bright interesting photos and a few well done graphics, this book will be a boon to the report-writing crowd. Each topic is covered in a double-page spread with appropriate illustrations and a list of fascinating facts. For example, in the section about plankton, one of the fascinating facts says, "Green algae first appeared more than two-billion years ago, making them one of Earth's oldest organisms." The book ends with a discussion of careers in oceans studies, indicating both a wide variety of possible careers, and what a child should study to move toward those careers. There is also an "Eco Challenge," where the reader is asked to take a ten-question quiz about information in the book and do a hands-on science experiment dealing with waves. Back matter includes a glossary, a list of books for further reading, web sites and an index. 2006, Weigl Publishers, Ages 8 to 12.—Amy S. Hansen
