Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
Part of the "Water Science" series, Ostopowich starts by explaining why we study the bodies of water around us. This book will appeal to the budding marine biologist, or anyone who likes great pictures of sea animals. Like the rest of the series, the writing is clear, and will be easily understood. Ostopowich's topics include: saltwater and fresh water, oceans, lakes and rivers, living underwater, and water uses. Topics are covered in one or two page spreads with eye-catching photos and diagrams. One of the last and best features of the series is a brief introduction of a professional in the field: "Oceanographers study the ocean floor, currents, water and tides. Scientists can learn a great deal from the oceans. New medicines and foods have been discovered by studying oceans." One of the photos shows Jacques Cousteau, the famous underwater explorer. Back matter includes a brief quiz, a demonstration of the difference between salt water and fresh water, a glossary, and an index. But there is more. These books have an online component. Using the book code printed inside the cover, readers can link to an online version of the book and a video. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
