Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
"When the mountains have all been climbed, all the deserts are crossed, and all the jungles explored…the ocean will still be a place where humans can fulfill their desire for adventure." The quote at the back of this lively book says it all. Australians Ron and Valerie Taylor, shark experts and marine conservationists, share their diving experiences, expertise, and love of the undersea world in this book about underwater exploration. After some easily understood pages about tides, currents, and ocean evolution, what better place to start the exploration than at the shore with its sandy beaches and mud flats. Now deeper, into the intertidal zone, with its world of tide pools and mangrove swamps. After a page on preparing to dive, the duo takes the young reader into underwater seaweed forests, coral reefs, and the open ocean with drifters (such as jelly fish, dolphins, and sharks). Arctic and Antarctic waters are featured, as well as migrating sea birds, whales, and sea turtles. Deeper diving means using equipment ranging from the aqua-lung to submersibles like the Alvin to investigate deep sea life, practice underwater archeology, or explore the sea floor and its inhabitants. No book about undersea diving is complete without discussion of the ocean's future, humankind's effect on the oceans, and saving the oceans for future generations of divers. The book is an exploration in itself, with peel-back pages, sea-through pages, both filled with breathtaking photography, colorful charts, and drawings of amazing creatures. Young readers, whether they are armchair explorers or dreaming of a career in marine science, will spend hours with this attractive book.
