Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
High above the deep ocean a most unusual family lives in a lighthouse. Pandora the cat, Seabold the dog, and their three mice children may not be a traditional family but family they are. When the full moon brings the lowest tide, the three little ones want to explore the newly uncovered shoreline. Armed with a picnic and promising never to turn their backs on the sea, Lila, Whistler, and Tiny set off to see what the low tide has revealed. They find a giant green sea anemone, an orange sea cucumber, and a little octopus who quickly becomes their friend. But all too soon the tide returns and poor Lila's feet are trapped in the sticky mud. Fortunately for her, their new friend thinks of a plan and, just in time, Lila is able to pull free. Delicate graphite drawings with a cozy old fashioned charm illustrate this fifth title in the "Lighthouse Family" series. This is a lovely book with the gentle message that families and friends come in all shapes and sizes and colors. This sweet and simple story would be a good choice to share with younger children. Some of the vocabulary may be a challenge for beginning readers. 2005, Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers, Ages 4 to 8.
