Children's Literature
A simple rhyming text imparts facts about these many tentacled creatures. Octopi speed away by squirting water to propel them to escape from becoming someone's dinner. They also shoot dark ink to confuse hungry predators such as sharks and can slip their boneless bodies into cracks and crevices where they will be safe. The illustrations show various parts of this creature's body and several demonstrate its full size. Interestingly, the octopus' suckers are shown in most pictures but their purpose is never described. All in all, a very good introduction to these creatures for early readers. A Level 1 "Hello Reader" science series book. There is a page of instructions directed to family members who will be assisting new readers. 2001, Cartwheel/Scholastic, . Ages 3 to 6.
