Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
More than fifty years have passed since The Beatles brought their music to the U.S., and now member Ringo Starr brings it to the children’s bookshelf, too. The lyrics of arguably the most fanciful of Starr’s compositions are printed here, accompanied by a visual daydream of oceanic wonder. As shown in Ben Cort’s illustrations, the narrator is a young boy who is talking to his goldfish and dreaming about a splendid watery adventure with friends (including the fish). Ringo Starr provides vocal talent on the CD packaged with the book, on one track singing the story/song, and in the other reading the text. Sticklers for detail who want absolute fidelity between the book and the audio material will not find it here. The discrepancy in the song is simply a we/they interchange; it is easy to gloss over. The spoken read-aloud has deliberate changes, as Ringo seems at times to be speaking directly to the reader as he adds questions and observations. This might work—it is not unlike the way many parents and children often share books, pausing to talk about what they are reading—but the repeated lines detract from the overall effect. For example, “Oh what joy for every girl and boy/ Knowing they’re happy and they’re safe/ (Happy and they’re safe).” makes sense when reading along with the song. The parenthetical passage is the background singer’s echo of the previous line. Unfortunately, it is distracting when Ringo reads both lines. Still, this is a charming book that will appeal to families who have enjoyed The Beatles music together. Readers will do well to pay close attention to Cort’s illustrations, full of attention-getting and laugh-inducing details. Reviewer: Heidi Hauser Green; Ages 2 to 8.

We purchased this as a third birthday gift for our granddaughter and she is totally in love with it. Within a week she can sing the whole song, and the ultimate seal of approval, it was the item she chose to take to show and tell at preschool!

The illustrator is as good as I have ever seen for a children's book. The story is whimsical and a good time for my little girl. Sometimes she is in the mood for the CD, and other times just wants it read. A+.
