From The CriticsReviewer: Brian Marshall, O.D. (Marshall Family Eye Care)
Description: This update of a 2005 book provides diagnosis, treatment, and management information on the most commonly encountered ocular problems.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date guide for healthcare providers to quickly diagnosis and treat ocular disorders in the clinic. The authors have done an extraordinary job of meeting this very worthwhile goal.
Audience: "This succinct manual is intended for optometrists, nurses, and physicians who need rapid access to information for most common ocular problems. This handbook is helpful for any clinician, resident, or even student who manages patients with disorders of the eye. The authors are all well-known experts in the field of ocular therapeutics and hold academic appointments.
Features: The book is divided into three sections. The first is a quick reference section that covers lab testing, pharmacology of ocular therapeutics, and side effects of systemic medications. The second and main section of the book is devoted to diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with ocular diseases and ocular urgencies and emergencies commonly encountered in a practice setting. The third and final section consists of the appendixes, which include common abbreviations, conversion charts, and important phone numbers. This edition has been completely revised and is now even quicker to use on the go thanks to the outline format and use of algorithms. Color photos have been added to greatly enhance the content. Updates in ocular and systemic medications are also greatly appreciated.
Assessment: The authors took a very good ocular handbook and made it even better. The addition of color photos and extensive use of algorithms in this highly portable and easy to use handbook make it the only guide a clinician needs to have to confidently treat patients with ocular disorders in the practice setting. Everyone who treats and manages ocular conditions needs this handbook in their office. It will be used every day.
