Overview

Interstring is very much a co-op. The group features four musicians based in Kansas City who usually work as sidemen. Electric guitarist Danny Embrey and acoustic guitarist Rod Fleeman blend together quite well, bassist Bob Bowman (who has many concise solos), and drummer Todd Strait are excellent in support, and most of the music is straight-ahead jazz. There are a few departures, most notably "Odahoda," which is part jazz/part hoedown, and the musicians are clearly aware of later post-bop developments. But in general this is a hard bop set, one that is easy to enjoy and finds all four musicians in prime form. "Prince" (a multi-tempoed exploration of "Someday My Prince Will Come") is a high point and a particularly rewarding example of Interstring at its best.
