Quick: what do Judy Garland, Spam, and Paul Bunyon have in common? It should be obvious from the title of this book, but in case you missed it, they are just three of the things celebrated in the state that should be known for more than being the stomping grounds of Jesse Ventura. Minnesota has a colorful, diverse, and often unusual history, and much of it is commemorated by amazing roadside carvings. Not content to be just the Land of 10,000 Lakes (actually, there are 14,215, but who's counting?), Minnesota boasts enough oddball sights to attract even the most jaded tourist. Roadside kitsch? Sure, but Pohlen, a regular travel commentator for the Chicago affiliate of National Public Radio, makes a good argument for spending some time in the hinterlands, visiting the the world's oldest rock and trying not to violate some of Minnesota's curious laws (e.g., male dancers must wear a cravat somewhere on their body, women in the city of Marshall cannot shine new shoes on Sunday). Books of this type are always popular with readers who would probably never consider visiting the area in question but are looking for something fun to read. Definitely recommended for all Minnesota (and regional) public libraries and for all others wishing to offer their patrons something just a little oddball. [Pohlen is the author of four titles in the "Oddball" series-Colorado, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana-and is currently working on Oddball Florida.-Ed.]-Joseph L.
