Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs
This is indeed a great legend about Odysseus. After the war with the Trojans is over, Odysseus thinks that his life has settled down and he just needs to get back home. That is easier said than done; the boats in his squadron seem to move from one mishap to the next. A terrible storm forces them ashore on the land of lotus-eaters. Then, the boats run ashore on the land of the Cyclops during a thick fog. Next is a stop on Witch Island and an ordeal with monsters. Odysseus encounters one adventure after another. The graphic novel format makes it the perfect choice for students who are reluctant readers and never seem to finish a book on their own. Young adults who want to read anything they can get their hands on will also enjoy the graphics and fast-paced text. The full-color graphics make an enormous impact on the story. Most pages include colored boxes with narration giving extra information to help with reading comprehension. The vocabulary has been well-selected, and this book is an excellent resource that could be used for writing a summary, writing a book report, or doing research. Backmatter includes a glossary with a pronunciation guide and a list of other books and websites that might be of interest to the reader. I highly recommend this selection from Graphic Universe's "Graphic Myths and Legends" series.
