Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Janis Flint-Ferguson
This is another in the series "Racing Mania" and it takes a look at the definition and the equipment that make up the off-road racing sport. The chapters each give a two page spread of text and photos that highlight the many facets of the sport from its origins in the Baja and the deserts to the many different kinds of vehicles that take part in off-road racing. The chapters also include a side bar that gives the "Inside Story" on some of the key characteristics and personalities. Legends and stars of the sport are named, along with those who started off road but are now well known in the NASCAR circuit. The importance of safety is described to give a rich, balanced introduction to young readers. There are bold terms, a glossary, an index and a short list of resource materials making this series a model of what researched writing looks like. Older elementary readers may pick these up if they are interested, but the book is certainly an easy reading, high interest text for middle school readers, especially the male reader.
