Check out the American Clock & Watch Museum, which boasts an exceptional collection of jeweled watches, alarm clocks, wall clocks, watch keys, and fobs. If you plan to visit Oregon, be sure to stop at the Sea Lion Caves for an astonishing look at hundreds of sea lions -- and do a little whale watching too. Stopping in Minnesota? If Georgia is on your route, plan to visit the Cloudland Canyon State Park, with its spectacular scenic views of rugged rock faces, ridges, valleys, and waterfalls. And if Hawaii beckons, don't forget to try the exotic pineapple wine at Tedeschi Vineyards on Maui.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
In 1987, Reader's Digest came out with a book that rapidly found its way onto the shelves of virtually every public library and into the hands of excited patrons who wanted to see America beyond the crowded tourist attractions. If that book still exists on library shelves today, it's probably looking a bit worn after more than a decade, so here's a chance to reintroduce the less-traveled United States to a new generation of readers. For the 1987 book, Reader's Digest staff pored over maps of the states, choosing places that they thought would be interesting to investigate. This time, they contacted each state's official tourist board to come up with destinations missed in the first edition. As a result, not only have the original hideaways been included but more than 200 new places have been added. Caves, museums, beaches, plantations, gardens, lava beds, remnants of historic trails-there surely is something for everyone here. The maps are a bit too generalized to be of much value, but the web sites (when available) provide useful and very current visitor information. Every library should make room for this hefty but loving look at the seldom-seen places that make America a treasure to discover.-Joseph L. Carlson, Allan Hancock Coll., Santa Maria, CA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
